Old Westbury, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team won its third straight game and got back to the .500 mark overall with an important 3-2 road league win at Old Westbury on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman
Dennis Reyes (Waldwick, N.J.) scored two goals for the Mount, including his fourth game winning goal of the season.
After falling behind 2-0 inside the first 20 minutes of play on Wednesday, the Dolphins scored the final three goals of the game to secure the win. Adan Cruz-Velasquez scored twice for the Panthers and Angel Velez assisted on both at 12:03 and 19:08, respectively.
Trailing 2-0, Reyes struck with his first goal of the game and 19
th goal of the season off a pass from
Andrew Gomez at 20:48. Gomez worked a crossing pass into the box that Reyes finished off to slice the Dolphins' deficit to 2-1.
After getting back to within a goal,
Kevin Jardines (South Gate, Calif.) scored for the second straight game to bring the Mount even at 2-2 in the 37
th minute. Jardines headed in a pass inside the box from freshman
Jaime Salazar (Long Beach, Calif.) at 36:46.
Tied at 2-2 at halftime, the two teams each finished the period with seven shots apiece. Old Westbury closed the half with a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks with sophomore
David Melchor (Los Angeles, Calif.) making three saves for the Dolphins.
The two teams would remain tied 2-2, until Reyes broke through for Mount Saint Vincent in the 88
th minute. He worked his way around the Old Westbury keeper with 2:33 left in regulation to pot his 20
th goal of the season.
Despite only getting away three shots after halftime, Mount Saint Vincent picked up its third straight win overall and its fourth league win of the season. The Dolphins were outshot in the game 13-10 and Old Westbury took the edge in corner kicks 11-7.
Melchor closed out the game with six saves in the game on his way to his seventh win of the season. His goals against average moves to 2.14 and his save percentage rises to .703. Kelvin Rivera suffered the loss for Old Westbury, making two saves in the game.
With Wednesday's win, Mount Saint Vincent moves to 8-8 overall on the season and to 4-3 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Dolphins is a road contest at Sage on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off with the Gators is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
