Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team won its fourth straight match on Wednesday night with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-12 non-conference win over John Jay. With raffles and a 'Miracle Minute' during the match, the program raised nearly $300 for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.
The Dolphins remained unbeaten at home with the win and opened the match by holding off the Bloodhounds late in the first set. The Dolphins allowed four straight service aces to tie the score at 22-22 before rallying with a kill from
Nichole Riehm (Irvington, N.Y.) and service ace from
Nicole Henderson (Bergenfield, N.J.) to move in front 1-0 in the match.
Mount Saint Vincent fell behind by as many as three points early in the second set, before running off four straight points to take an 11-10 advantage on a John Jay attack error. After the Bloodhounds knotted the score at 11-11, the Mount finished the set with a 14-7 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
The Mount allowed consecutive points to John Jay only twice in the third set and put the match away with a 12-3 closing run featuring three service aces from
Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.). She finished the deciding set with five kills and a .500 hitting percentage to lead the Dolphins.
Scozzari closed the match leading all players with 11 kills and hit .346 on the night. She added five aces, seven digs and two blocks to the winning effort.
Maria Leineweber (Waimanalo, Hawaii) chipped in with seven kills and four digs for the Dolphins.
Junior
Zana Daluz (Pawtucket, R.I.) added five kills and three total blocks, while Henderson finished the night with 19 assists and four aces.
Jennifer Roman (Queens Village, N.Y.) lifted a match-high 10 digs on the night and added two aces.
Mount Saint Vincent hit .119 as a team in the match and held a 28-17 advantage in kills. The Dolphins finished with 13 service aces and held a slim 3-2 edge in total team blocks.
The win gives Mount Saint Vincent a season-high four match winning streak and gets it to the .500 mark for the first time this season at 10-10 overall. Next up for the Dolphins is a pair of Skyline Conference matches on Saturday in Troy, N.Y. against Sage and St. Joseph's-L.I.
