Box Score

New York, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team opened the 2013 season on Saturday afternoon with an impressive 2-0 road win at the City College of New York. Victor Ramirez (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Matthew Samaan (Manalapan, N.J.) were the goal scorers and David Melchor (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded the shutout in his first collegiate start.

After a scoreless first half that was played evenly, the Dolphins broke through with the only two goals of the contest after halftime. Ramirez tallied the eventual game winner in the 49th minute off a feed from classmate Jorge Chavez (West Covina, Calif.) on a give-and-go play. It was the first career marker for Ramirez and the first career point for Chavez.

Samaan tallied for the fifth time in his career and for the first time in this season to give the Dolphins an insurance marker at the 74:04 mark of the contest. Nick Benitez (Floral Park, N.Y.) started the play on a slide tackle and collected his first career point on the play with the helper.

Melchor made the two goals stand after making eight saves in the contest for his first career shutout. He stopped four shots in each period for the Dolphins who won their season opener for the first time since prior to the 2004 campaign. His counterpart from CCNY, Chris Blanco, made six stops.

The Dolphins held a slim 15-14 edge in shots in the contest, while shots on goal were knotted at eight apiece. Ramirez and Pablo Tellez (El Monte, Calif.) led the way for the Mount with three shots apiece. CCNY finished the game with a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Saturday's win avenges a 5-2 loss to the Beavers in the 2012 season opener and snaps a nine match losing streak dating back to last season.

The season opening win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 1-0 on the season. Next up for the Dolphins is a trip to Sarah Lawrence on September 9. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
