Schroeher Sets New Hitting Streak Mark, But Dolphins Fall Twice To Knights

Freshman collects four hits, three RBI in league twin bill

Newburgh, N.Y. – College of Mount Saint Vincent freshman Keith Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.) set a new program mark by hitting safely in 13 straight games on Sunday, but the Dolphins dropped a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Mount Saint Mary by scores of 11-9 and 13-12. Schroeher picked up two hits in both games for the Mount.
 
Mount Saint Vincent got on the board with two runs in the top of the first in game one on only one hit. Schroeher scored on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a walk and Steven Maio (Thornwood, N.Y.) drove in Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) to extend the early lead.
 
After the Knights cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the first, the Dolphins answered right back with a Schroeher sacrifice fly. Tyler Rieth (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) crossed with the run to give the Mount a 3-1 lead.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would extend its lead to 8-1 in the fifth inning when it pushed across five runs on four hits. Keith Brodesser (Copiague, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double and later scored on a passed ball and Tyler Krowlikowski (Massapequa, N.Y.) doubled home Mike Esposito (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) to close out the scoring in the inning.
 
Mount Saint Mary would inch closer with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and then erupted with eight runs in the home half of the eighth to complete the comeback. The Knights put together seven hits in the inning with Chris Chieffo driving home two runs with a single and Michael Matuk doubling three runs with a two out double.
 
The Dolphins would get a run back on a Schroeher RBI single in the ninth, but left the tying runs on base in the inning.
 
Schroeher finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI in game one with Sharpe and Esposito each scoring a pair of runs. Maio continued his strong play with a hit and two RBI for the Dolphins.
 
Matuck closed game one 2-for-5 with four RBI for Mount Saint Mary and Vinnie Carminati went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI.
 
Michael Klein picked up the win in relief for Mount Saint Mary with a scoreless inning for the Knights. Rich Dionisio (West Islip, N.Y.) took the loss for the Dolphins after working 1.1 innings of relief. Michael Kuczinski (Millstone Township, N.J.) had a strong start for the Mount, allowing three runs in 6.0 innings.
 
Mount Saint Vincent got off to another strong start in game two, plating two runs with help from an Esposito run scoring single. He drove home Brodesser with the hit and Sharpe later scored on an error for another early 2-0 lead.
 
The Knights came back to score five runs in the second and three more in the third to jump out to an 8-3 advantage. Mike Leone drove home two runs in the big second with a single and Caminati plated two with a triple for the Knights. Leone also added a run scoring base hit in the third for Mount Saint Mary.
 
Trailing 8-3 after three innings, the Dolphins scored seven runs on six hits in the fourth to pull in front 10-8 in the middle innings. Brodesser delivered two runs with a single for the Mount with Joseph Senisi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Schroeher also collecting run scoring safeties.
 
The Dolphins added two runs in the top of the fifth after the Knights got a run back in the fourth to take a 12-9 advantage. Sharpe drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth and Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) plated a run with a sacrifice fly.
 
Mount Saint Mary got back to within 12-11 with two runs in the fifth on a Matuck two-run single and then walked off with its second win of the day with two more runs in the home half of the seventh. Matuck was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the tying run and Tim Stauder followed with a single through the middle to send the Knights to the win.
 
James Nakashian finished up game two 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI for the Knights with Leone going 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Matuck also drove in three runs for Mount Saint Mary.
 
Schroeher moved passed Sharpe, Tanner Monroe and Al Schor who hit safely in 12 straight games with a 2-for-4 effort in game two. He scored three times out of the leadoff spot and added an RBI. Esposito and Krowlikowski each recorded two hits and Rivera drove in two runs for the Mount.
 
Joe CoFrancesco earned the win with 2.2 innings of relief work for Mount Saint Mary. He allowed one hit in the scoreless appearance. Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.) suffered the loss after allowing two runs in an inning of relief. James Puma (Thornwood, N.Y.) made the start and allowed three earned runs on four hits in 2.0 innings.
 
Sunday's sweep drops Mount Saint Vincent to 2-21 overall on the season and to 2-6 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Dolphins is a non-conference matchup with John Jay on April 13.
