Dolphins Snap Skid With Sweep Of NYU-POLY

Old Westbury, N.Y. – Behind four RBI from Steven Maio (Thornwood, N.Y.) in game one and Zhadei Castillo's (Bronx, N.Y.) first career save in game two, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team snapped its 19 game losing streak on Saturday with 16-6 and 6-3 wins on the road at NYU-POLY.
 
The Dolphins broke Saturday's first game open early with four runs in the first inning and three more in the second. Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) got the Dolphins on the board with a run scoring single and Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) added to the lead with an RBI double in the inning. In all, the Mount had four run scoring base hits in their first at-bat.
 
Mount Saint Vincent added to its lead in the second when Sharpe, Rivera and Maio each added their second run producing base hits of the game. The Dolphins totaled four hits in the inning.
 
NYU-POLY would get on the board in the third inning on a Julian Santulli RBI single and added three more runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The Dolphins, though, would score in each of their final three at-bats, plating three in the fifth, one in the sixth and then five more in the seventh.
 
Keith Brodesser (Copiague, N.Y.) drove in two runs in the fifth with a double and Keith Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.) doubled in the inning, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.
 
Maio drove in his third run of the game in the sixth and Sharpe doubled home a run in the seventh as the Dolphins scored their most runs in a game this season.
 
Mount Saint Vincent had seven different players with a hit in game one, with Chris Sideli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Sharpe each going 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Sharpe drove in three runs and Sideli ripped a double and picked up an RBI.  Rivera finished up 2-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored and Maio went 3-for-5 with four RBI.
 
Senior Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.) earned his first win of the season with 5.0 solid innings. He allowed four runs on six hits while striking out three. Christian Conroy was saddled with the loss after allowing 11 earned runs on 14 hits in 6.1 innings.
 
After falling behind 2-0 in game two, Mount Saint Vincent erupted for five runs in the top half of the second to pull in front for good in the game. Brodesser and Schroeher keyed the rally with run scoring hits in the inning.
 
The Jays cut the Mount Saint Vincent lead to 5-3 with a run in the bottom half of the second, but the Dolphins added an insurance run in the fourth after Schroeher singled and scored on a miscue by the centerfielder.
 
Schroeher continued to swing a hot bat after going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. He is now within one game of tying the program's longest hitting streak of 12 games. Brodesser, Sharpe and Tyler Krowlikowski (Massapequa, N.Y.) all drove in runs in game two for the Dolphins.
 
Anthony Granitto (Bronx, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief after working 4.2 effective innings. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out six for the Mount. Castillo came on to work the final 2.0 innings to earn the save, allowing two base hits.
 
Saturday's sweep gets Mount Saint Vincent into the win column and moves it to 2-19 overall on the season and to 2-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will look to build on Saturday's momentum when they travel to Mount Saint Mary on Sunday. First pitch with the Knights is set for 12:00 p.m.
