Schlichter fans seven, Maio drives in two runs

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team won for the third time in its last four games with a 15-4 Skyline Conference win over Yeshiva on Wednesday afternoon. Steven Maio (Thornwood, N.Y.) drove in two runs and Ryan Schlichter (Southold, N.Y.) struck out seven in 6.0 innings of work.
 
The Dolphins scored in every inning on Wednesday, including three runs in the first and fifth innings and four runs in the fourth. The Dolphins plated three runs on only one hit in the first inning with Joseph Senisi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singling with one out.
 
In the four run fourth inning, the Dolphins did not record a hit. Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) drove in a run with a groundout and Keith Brodesser (Copiague, N.Y.) was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded accounting for the fourth run of the frame, giving the Dolphins a 10-0 lead.
 
After Yeshiva scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Dolphins came right back with three tallies in the home half of the inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Leutrim 'Tim' Hoxha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) drove home three runs with a double to push the Mount in front 13-2.
 
Trailing by 11 runs, Yeshiva got a one out double from Adam Volk who was driven home on a triple from Yaniv Lautman. Lautman later scored on a groundout from Jonathan Berger to cut its deficit to 13-4.
 
Mount Saint Vincent closed out its scoring in the home half of the sixth inning when it loaded the bases with one out. Chris Sideli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove home Senisi with a sacrifice fly and Maio followed on a throwing error to move the Dolphins in front by the final 15-4 advantage.
 
The Dolphins only recorded four hits in the game, with Maio going 2-for-5 with five runs scored. Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) walked four times and scored three runs. Senisi scored three times and stole three of the Mount's 11 bases. Keith Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.) scored a run, but went 0-for-4 stopping his program record 21 game hitting streak.
 
Schlichter picked up the win for Mount Saint Vincent and moved to 1-0 on the season. He allowed four hits and three earned runs in 6.0 innings and struck out seven. Zhahedi Castillo (Bronx, N.Y.) worked a scoreless seventh inning for the Dolphins.
 
Wednesday's win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 6-26 overall on the season and to 5-10 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will complete the season series with Yeshiva on Thursday night at Taft High School. First pitch is set for 8:00 p.m.
