Mount Saint Vincent Sweeps Skyline Conference Twin Bill From Maritime

Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team picked up a pair of league wins on Sunday at Maritime, downing the Privateers 14-3 and 9-8. Freshman Keith Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.) extended his program best hitting streak to 20 games and Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) drove in five runs in the game one victory.
 
After trading runs in the first inning, Mount Saint Vincent opened a 6-2 advantage with a run in the third and two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. Rivera drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third and then delivered two runs in the fifth with a single. Chris Sideli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Schroeher scored on the two-out base hit in the fifth.
 
Schroeher also had a hand in the two run sixth inning for the Dolphins after ripping a two-run triple with one out. Leutrim 'Tim' Hoxha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single and Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch setting up Schroeher's first career triple.
 
After Maritime added a run in the home half of the sixth, Mount Saint Vincent blew the game open with eight tallies in the top of the seventh inning. The Dolphins had four hits in the inning and scored a pair of runs via the bases loaded walk.
 
Mike Esposito (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) drove home Sideli with a single to get the scoring in the inning started before Rivera scored on a balk. Sharpe and Sideli later pushed Hoxha and Schroeher across with bases loaded walks and Rivera closed out the scoring with a two-run single.
 
The Dolphins outhit the Privateers in game one 11-4 and had three players record three hits in the contest. Schroeher went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI out of the lead off spot and Hoxha finished up 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Rivera closed out a big game 3-for-3 with a run and five RBI. Sideli finished up with three runs scored and a double for the Mount.
 
Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.) earned his second win of the season for the Dolphins in the game after working 6.0 strong innings. He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out seven in the winning effort.
 
The Dolphins got off to another fast start in game two and plated three runs in the second inning to move in front 3-0. Mount Saint Vincent needed only one hit in the inning and took advantage of three Maritime errors.
 
After Maritime scratched back to within a run after plating single tallies in the fourth and sixth, the Dolphins extended its lead to 4-2 when Esposito scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Keith Brodesser (Copiague, N.Y.).
 
Joey Semler got a run back for Maritime in the home half of the sixth on a run scoring groundout to slice its deficit to 4-3, but Esposito tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning.
 
Trailing 5-3, Maritime rallied in the bottom of the seventh when Bruce Tyler ripped a one-out, two-run double to tie the score at 5-5. Maritime would get the winning run to third base with two outs but could not push the run across.


After a scoreless eighth inning, the Mount exploded for four runs in the ninth to pull in front 9-5. Hoxha drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Brodesser singled home Rivera. Schroeher closed out the scoring in the inning with a two-out, two-run single.
 
Maritime would come back with three runs in the home half of the inning and had the tying run on base, but the Dolphins got a fly out to secure the sweep.
 
Mount Saint Vincent was outhit in the game 9-8, but Maritime made seven errors leading to eight unearned runs. Schroeher and Joseph Senisi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each finished the game with two hits and Esposito scored three runs. Brodesser also added a pair of base hits and scored two runs for the Dolphins.
 
Coogan made the game two start for Mount Saint Vincent and took a no decision after working 6.0 innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits. Rich Dionisio (West Islip, N.Y.) picked up the win after working the final 2.2 innings.
 
With the two wins on Sunday, Mount Saint Vincent moves to 5-25 overall on the season and to 4-10 in league play. Next up for the Dolphins is a non-conference contest with NJCU on Tuesday. First pitch at Van Cortlandt Park is set for 4:00 p.m.
