Mount Saint Vincent Falls Twice On The Road At Sage

Troy, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball squad was downed twice on Saturday on the road at Sage, dropping a pair of 7-1 decisions to the Gators. Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) struck out six in the opener and hit a home run in game two.
 
The Dolphins took their only lead of the game in the third inning of game one on Saturday when Danielle Kirrane (Bronx, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch. Kirrane led off the inning with one of only two hits for the Mount and advanced on two groundouts before crossing with the Mount's lone run.
 
Sage quickly answered back with three runs in the home half of the inning to take the lead for good in the contest. Kelsey Newberg and Karlie Williams each picked up run scoring singles in the inning for the Gators.
 
The home side would go on to open a six run lead in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on four base hits. Newberg was in the middle of the rally again for Sage with another run scoring single.
 
Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) and Kirrane had the only base hits for the Dolphins in the opener on Saturday with Kirrane scoring the only run of the contest for the Mount.
 
Newberg finished up game one 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Tiffany Bezio closed the game 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored for the Gators.
 
Davis took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent and fell to 3-10 on the season. She worked 6.0 innings and allowed six earned runs on 10 hits. She struck out six Sage hitters and walked three. Katie Kovage moved to 7-1 for Sage after firing a two-hitter and striking out three.
 
In game two on Saturday, Sage did all of its scoring in the first two innings and opened an early 4-0 lead in its first at-bat. Hillary Faas drove home a run with a double and Courtney Laughlin and Rachel Smith also picked up run scoring base hits in the inning.
 
The Gators expanded their lead in the second with three more runs with the help of a two-run home run from Kristen Beikirch. Laughlin added her second RBI single in as many innings in the second to close out the scoring for Sage.
 
Davis got Mount Saint Vincent on the board in the top of the sixth inning when she connected on her second home run of the season. Davis is now second on the team in extra base hits with 10 and is the team leader in RBI with 19.
 
Davis, Guerra and Danielle Maffei (Valhalla, N.Y.) picked up the only hits in the game for Mount Saint Vincent with Kirrane drawing a walk. Maffei doubled for the Dolphins as two of their three hits in the game went for extra bases.
 
Beikirch wrapped up game two 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for Sage and Faas added two hits and scored twice. Laughlin closed out a strong game 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI .
 
Casey Cuccio (Medford, N.Y.) took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent after working 1.0 inning and allowing three earned runs on four hits. Davis came on to work the final 5.0 frames for the Dolphins, allowing three runs and fanning three.
 
Newberg picked up the win for Sage and improved to 7-7 on the season, allowing one hit and striking out five in 5.0 innings. Smith worked the final 2.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits.
 
Saturday's sweep drops Mount Saint Vincent to 9-23 overall on the season and to 2-10 in league play. The Dolphins will close out the regular season on Sunday when they play host to NYU-POLY. First pitch at Purchase College is scheduled for noon.
