Mount Saint Vincent sets HBP record in win

Box Score
Bronx, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team got back into the win column on Thursday night with a 24-16 win over cross-town rival Lehman. The Dolphins set a new single game program record in the victory after getting plunked with 11 pitches.

Mount Saint Vincent found itself trailing 6-1 after an inning and a half on Wednesday, but exploded for six runs in the home half of the second and then nine more in the bottom of the fourth. Steven Guistino (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) and Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) delivered runs via the bases loaded walk and Steven Maio (Thornwood, N.Y.) drove home a pair of runs with a single in the second.

The Dolphins sent 14 hitters to the plate in the fourth inning and had four players get hit by a pitch to go along with four Lehman errors. The Mount scored nine runs in the frame on only two base hits.

Keith Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.) extended his hitting streak to 16 games in the inning with an RBI single. Chris Sideli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove home three runs in the inning, two with a double and one with a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

After taking the lead in the fourth, Mount Saint Vincent would not surrender it and would add on a single run in the fifth, four runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth. The 24 runs is a season-high for the Dolphins, but is 11 runs shy of the program record of 35 set on March 22, 2009 against NYU-POLY.

Despite scoring 24 runs, the Dolphins were outhit in the game by Lehman 18-11 and had just three players with multiple hits in the contest. Schroeher finished 2-for-6 with two runs scored and Maio went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Sideli also had a big game for Mount Saint Vincent and finished up 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBI. Sidlei was also one of three Dolphins to reach base twice after getting hit with a pitch.

Sharpe closed out the game 1-for-5 for the Mount but scored four times and drove in two runs. He reached base safely three times after drawing a walk and getting hit with a pitch. Following Thursday's game, Sharpe has amassed 103 base hits and is just the eighth player in program history to reach 100 safeties. Sharpe is just 52 hits away from matching the all-time record of 155.

Joseph Senisi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored five runs for the Dolphins in the win and reached base six times in the game and Matthew McCormack (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in four runs and scored twice.

The Dolphins used nine pitchers in the game on Thursday, with sophomore Zahedi Castillo (Bronx, N.Y.) earning the win. He worked 2.0 scoreless innings for Mount Saint Vincent, allowing three hits and striking out three Lehman hitters.

Thursday's victory pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 3-23 overall heading into the week. Mount Saint Vincent will hit the field again on Saturday when it takes on league rival Old Westbury. First pitch at Purchase College is set for noon.
