Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team dropped a pair of hard fought decision to Farmingdale State on Sunday, falling to the Rams 4-3 and 7-4.
Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) struck out nine in game one and
Danielle Maffei (Valhalla, N.Y.) drove in three runs in game two.
Farmingdale State got off to a good start with a run in the first inning of game one to take an early 1-0 lead. Meagan Anderson led of the game with a single and then later scored on a Michelle Mongiello base hit with one out.
The Rams had chances to extend the lead in the second and third, but left a combined five runners on base. In the third inning, Farmingdale State got two walks and a double from Jennifer Jarczynski, but all three were stranded by Davis.
Trailing 1-0, the Dolphins pulled in front 2-1 in the fifth inning after
Joanna Makayan (Maspeth, N.Y.) and Davis drove in runs. Makayan pushed
Leeann Cerbone (Bronx, N.Y.) with a two-out bunt base hit and Davis later singled home
Ashley Winn (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to move the Mount in front.
Mount Saint Vincent would hold on to the one run lead until there were two outs and two strikes on Kristen Flint in the seventh. Flint delivered a three-run home run to send Farmingdale State in front for good in the game. Makayan drove home her second run of the game in the home half of the seventh but was stranded.
Sam Johrden was the only Farmingdale State player with more then one hit after going 2-for-3. The first five hitters in the Rams' lineup picked up a hit in game one.
Allison Regan (Carmel, N.Y.) finished game one 2-for-3 for the Dolphins and Makayan went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Davis went 1-for-4 out of the leadoff spot to go along with an RBI.
Davis also pitched a strong game for the Dolphins in the opener working her ninth complete game of the season. She allowed just one earned run in the game and struck out nine. Taylor Webb earned the win, striking out six and surrendering nine hits.
In game two on Sunday, Farmingdale State took advantage of five hits and two Mount Saint Vincent errors to score six of its seven runs in the first inning. Flint picked up another RBI with a single in the big first inning for the Rams.
Mount Saint Vincent would answer with a run in the bottom of the first when Maffei doubled home Davis who opened the frame with a single. The Dolphins would be held off the board until they plated three runs in the last of the seventh.
Trailing 7-1 in game two, the Dolphins strung together three hits in their final at-bat to get the game to the final 7-4 decision.
Danielle Kirrane (Bronx, N.Y.) opened the inning with a single and later scored on a
Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) single. Maffei picked up her second extra base hit in the game with a two-run triple for the Dolphins.
Davis finished game two 3-for-4 with a run scored and Maffei went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Maffei is leading the Dolphins with a .416 average and paces the team 10 extra base hits. Kirrane closed the contest with a hit and a run scored.
Hillary Genova led Farmingdale State in game two with a 3-for-3 effort and two runs scored. The first five hitters in the lineup scored a run for the Rams.
Webb won her second decision of the game after allowing four runs on eight hits.
Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) pitched well for the Dolphins in defeat, allowing four earned runs on seven hits. She struck out four and walked two.
The two losses on Sunday drop Mount Saint Vincent to 5-19 overall and to 2-8 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will take the field again on Tuesday when they play host to John Jay. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
