Montclair, N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Lacrosse team dropped a 22-3 decision on Wednesday night at Montclair State in its 2013 Skyline Conference opener. Junior
John Petito (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished the game with two goals for the Dolphins.
The Red Hawks broke the game open early on Wednesday, scoring eight goals in each of the first two quarters. Jack Skeels and Michael Jevic each scored three times in the first period for Montclair State and Sam Morrissey netted three goals in the second.
Petito scored the Dolphins' only goal of the first half with 9:27 left in the first quarter off an assist from
Frank Maddaloni (Bronx, N.Y.) to get the Mount to within 2-1 in the early going. Montclair State answered the goal with the next 18 goals of the game to open a 20-1 advantage.
Matt Desimone (Congers, N.Y.) snapped the Red Hawk run in the first minute of the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal, his ninth of the season. Petito closed out the scoring with just under seven minutes left in the game. The goal ties him with
Bruce Pappas (Montrose, N.Y.) for the team lead in tallies with 12.
Montclair State had nine different players score a goal in the game, with Morrissey scoring six times and finishing with eight points after handing out two assists. Jevic scored five times and totaled two assists and Skeels recorded three goals and assisted on five others. Skeels also led the team with nine groundballs.
Petito added a groundball to his scoring output on Wednesday, with Maddaloni and
Pat McEnaney (New York, N.Y.) each scooping three for the Dolphins.
Derek Wilson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won nine face-offs for the Dolphins and caused a pair of turnovers.
Kyle Kalibat (Oceanside, N.Y.) finished the night with 14 saves in goal and picked up a team-high eight groundballs. Montclair State used a trio of goalies in the game, with Drew Lamela playing 30 minutes and making four saves.
Montclair State finished with a 55-21 advantage in shots on Wednesday and a 55-33 edge in groundballs. The Red Hawks also won 18 of the 29 face-offs taken, with Nick Grasso going 10-for-17.
Wednesday loss drops Mount Saint Vincent back to the .500 mark at 4-4 overall and to 0-1 in league play. The Dolphins will look to rebound on April 2 when they host Mitchell. Face-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
