Jersey City, N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games Tuesday on the road at New Jersey City University by scores of 8-2 and 2-1.
Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) struck out nine for the Mount in game one and freshman
Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) fanned seven in game two.
The Gothic Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one after plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the home half of the third. Juliana Jacobson plated the first two runs with a two-run home run in the first and Maxine Kaminski added a run scoring base hit in the two-run third.
The Dolphins got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth when Davis drove home
Danielle Maffei (Valhalla, N.Y.) with her team leading sixth double of the season. Davis also leads the team with 14 RBI.
After NJCU plated three runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth to pull in front 8-1, Mount Saint Vincent closed the scoring in the game with a run in the seventh.
Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) connected on her first home run of the season and drove in her third run of the campaign.
Maffei finished game one 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Dolphins, with Guerra, Davis and
Leeann Cerbone (Bronx, N.Y.) also adding base hits. Guerra also worked two walks in the game for Mount Saint Vincent.
NJCU outhit the Mount in game one 10-5 and had three players with two hits. Jacobson and Marissa Bariso each scored two runs for the Gothic Knights and worked a pair of walks each.
Davis took the loss in the circle and fell to 1-4 on the season after working her fifth complete game of the season. She struck out nine and walked five in 6.0 innings of work. Ashley O'Beirne moved to 7-5 on the season after allowing five hits and fanning five.
Game two, which was called after six innings due to darkness, proved to be a pitching duel between Dalton and O'Beirne. Dalton allowed one earned run and struck out seven in falling to 3-6 on the year, while O'Beirne allowed a run on six hits in moving to 8-6.
The Gothic Knights did all their scoring in the first two innings when Jacobson drove home a run with a single in the first inning and Thalia Garcia plated the eventual game winning run in the second with a run scoring groundout.
The Mount would cut the deficit in half in the third inning when Maffei scored on a passed ball. Maffei led off the inning with a single and later stole second and advanced to third on a groundout.
Trailing by a run, the Dolphins would put two runners on with one out in the fifth but could not get the score tied. Davis and Dalton both singled with one out before being stranded after a groundout and foul out.
Mount Saint Vincent had six different players record a hit, including Maffei who extended her season-high hitting streak to nine games. She finished the game 1-for-3 with the team's only run scored.
Casey Perez and Jacobson each closed the game with two hits for NJCU, with Bariso and Taylor Setar each scoring a run.
With Tuesday's sweep Mount Saint Vincent falls to 4-10 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look to rebound on Wednesday when they travel to Briarcliff. The twinbill is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
