Mount Saint Vincent Settles For Split At Old Westbury

Kathleen Davis fanned double-digit hitters for the second straight outing in game one

Davis fires complete game shutout in game one win

Old Westbury, N.Y. – Behind a complete game shutout and 12 strikeouts from Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) in a 1-0 game one victory, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team earned a split at Old Westbury Sunday afternoon, falling in game two 7-0.
 
Davis allowed eight hits in the game one victory, but held Old Westbury off the scoreboard as she earned her first victory of the season. She struck out 12 hitters and now has 25 punch outs in her last two outings.
 
Mount Saint Vincent pushed across the only run of the game in the fifth with an unearned tally. Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) singled with two outs and Daniell Maffei (Valhalla, N.Y.) aboard who scored on a fielding error after the base hit.
 
Guerra and Maffei each went 2-for-3 for the Dolphins and Leann Cerbone (Bronx, N.Y.) and Casey Cuccio (Medford, N.Y.) each collected a hit for the Mount.
 
Nicole Petrucci paced Old Westbury with a 3-for-4 effort, while Jennifer Jean and Corrine Protasiewicz each collected a pair of hits. The Panthers outhit the Dolphins in the game 8-6.
 
Alyssa Clancy took the tough luck loss for Old Westbury after surrendering six hits and no earned runs. She struck out nine and did not walk a batter as she moved to 5-6 on the season.
 
In game two on Sunday, the Panthers broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the fourth before adding an insurance run in the fifth and breaking the game open with four tallies in the sixth.
 
Protasiewicz drove home the game winning run with a single in the fourth and Jacqui Alvarado added a two-run single in the sixth to close out the scoring and salvage the split for the Panthers.
 
Mount Saint Vincent had three players record two hits in the game, with Guerra going 2-for-4 and Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) and Cuccio going 2-for-3.
 
Alvarado and Jessica Spero each drove in two runs in game two for the Panthers and Old Westbury had seven different players score a run. The Panthers also had three players with multiple hits as they outhit the Mount for the second time on the day, 11-8.
 
Dalton took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent and fell to 3-5 on the season after allowing seven runs on 11 hits. She struck out five and walked two in the outing. Clancy evened her record at 6-6 on the season with the shutout. She fanned five and did not walk a batter.
 
With Sunday's split, Mount Saint Vincent moves to 4-8 overall on the season and to 1-5 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for Mount Saint Vincent is a non-conference date with NJCU on Tuesday. First pitch with the Gothic Knights is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
