Patchogue, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team had its season opening losing streak extended to 13 games on Sunday with two league losses against St. Joseph's-L.I. The Dolphins were downed in game one by a score of 13-3 and then dropped a 3-1 pitcher's duel in game two.
Rich Dionisio (West Islip, N.Y.) worked a complete game for the Mount in Sunday's second game.
The two teams traded the first four runs of the game, with the Golden Eagles jumping in front 2-0 in the top half of the third inning. St. Joseph's-L.I. strung together three hits in the inning with Mike Alisio tripling home a run and Alex Ras driving home a run with a groundout.
Trailing 2-0, the Dolphins came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the score.
Keith Brodesser (Copiague, N.Y.) walked to open the inning and
Keith Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.) put two runners in scoring position with a double to right center field.
The Mount would go on to get back-to-back sacrifice flies from Tyler Krowlikowski (Massapequa, N.Y.) and
Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) to get on the board and tie the score.
With the score still tied in the fifth, St. Joseph's broke the game open with eight runs and added two more runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to secure the victory. The Golden Eagles only needed one hit in the big fifth inning, working six walks and getting two hit batsmen.
The Golden Eagles had three runs pushed across via either walk or hit batter before Alisio drove home three runs with a bases clearing double with two outs in the inning.
Alisio closed the opener 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored for St. Joseph's. Dan Diblasi and Matt Ginobbi each picked up a pair of hits and a run scored for the Golden Eagles.
Mount Saint Vincent was outhit in the game 9-3 with Schroeher,
Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) and
Mike Esposito (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) recording safeties for the Dolphins. Schroeher, Sharpe and Brodesser crossed with runs for the Mount in the game.
Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.) took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent and fell to 0-4 on the season. He allowed eight runs on five hits, walking five batters and striking out one. Robert Hyde picked up the win and moved to 1-2 after going 6.0 innings and allowing three runs.
The Golden Eagles continued its scoring string with a run in the first in game two and added single runs in the third and fourth to take a 3-0 advantage. DiBlasi drove in the first run with a two-out infield single and Kenny Willms singled through the middle in the third to push St. Joseph's in front 2-0. The Golden Eagles' final run came on throwing error in the fourth after a leadoff double from Brian Hannigan.
Mount Saint Vincent would get on the board in the home half of the fourth on an RBI single from Rivera. After Sharpe singled and advanced on a wild pitch, Rivera singled to centerfield for the Dolphins' only run of the tilt.
Dioniso pitched a strong game for the Dolphins, firing 7.0 innings and surrendering two earned runs on nine hits. It was his first career complete game and he finished the contest with one strikeout. Steve Szobesky picked up the win, allowing three hits in 5.2 innings. Chris Rubin earned the save after working the final 1.1 innings.
Sunday's sweep drops Mount Saint Vincent to 0-13 overall on the season and to 0-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will return to play on Tuesday when they travel to the College of Staten Island. First pitch for the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
