Patchogue, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent softball team was handed two Skyline Conference losses on Saturday at St. Joseph's-L.I. by scores of 7-2 and 10-2. Freshman
Danielle Maffei (Valhalla, N.Y.) picked up two base hits for the Dolphins in each game.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opener on Saturday after scoring five runs in the second and then single runs in the third and fourth. The big second inning was highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Gianni Gulli.
Leading by five, St. Joseph's added an unearned run in the third and then got a run scoring single from Gina Moscatelli to close out its scoring in the game.
Mount Saint Vincent would get on the board with two runs in the fifth inning to get back to within five runs. Following singles from Maffei and
Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.),
Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) delivered both with her fourth double of the season.
Dalton was one of six different Dolphins with a hit in game one and drove home their only two runs. Maffei, Davis, and
Joann Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) all went 2-for-4 in the game, with Maffei and Davis scoring runs.
Moscatelli was the only St. Joseph's player with more the one hit, going 2-for-4 in the game with two runs and an RBI.
Davis took the loss for the Mount in the opener after allowing six earned runs and allowing eight hits. She struck out a season-high 13 batters for the Mount and walked three. Cassie Martinez took the win after fanning 10 and allowing two runs.
The Mount found itself trailing in the early going again in game two after the Golden Eagles plated four in the first inning and another in the second to pull in front 5-0.
Moscatelli was in the middle of things for St. Joseph's after tripling in two runs and scoring on an error in the first. Mallory McClafferty and Megan Leun adding run scoring hits in the first two innings.
Mount Saint Vincent got back to within three runs in the third with its only two runs of the tilt. Davis drove home runs 12 and 13 with her fifth double of the season. Her marks in both categories are team-highs for the Dolphins.
Leading by three, the Golden Eagles would put the game away with a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Moscatelli and dove home two more runs for St. Joseph's in the fifth inning.
Moscatello drove in four runs in game two and went 3-for-4 with two triples and three runs scored. McClafferty was also 3-for-4 with two RBI and Lindsay Corriss went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Maffei was 2-for-3 for the Mount in game two with a run scored, with Davis and Leann Cerbone (Bronx, N.Y.) recording the only other hits in the game for the Dolphins.
Dalton took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent, allowing nine earned runs and striking out five in 4.2 innings of work. Julia DeCarmine earned the victory after surrendering four hits and striking out five Dolphins.
Saturday's sweep drops Mount Saint Vincent to 3-7 overall on the season and to 0-4 in league play. The Dolphins will look to rebound on Sunday when they play at Old Westbury starting at 2:00 p.m.
