Baseball Kicks-Off Opening Weekend at #7 Kean On Friday

Dolphins then head to Virginia for three games Saturday and Sunday

Riverdale, N.Y. – Head Coach Paul LaMarr and the College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team will open the 2013 season on Friday when they travel to #7 Kean. The Dolphins will continue the season opening road swing with a game against Juniata in Waynesboro, Va. on Saturday and then a doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite on Sunday afternoon.
 
Friday's contest will mark the third straight season the Dolphins have opened the season with the Cougars. In 2012, the Mount posted a 1-0 victory over then #3 Kean for the program's first ever win over a nationally ranked opponent.
 
Brian Rush (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made the start and worked 6.0 innings for the Dolphins, striking out six. Anthony Mongelli came on to work the final three innings for the Dolphins, picking up the win in relief.
 
Offensively in 2013, the Dolphins return a pair of All-League selections in Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) as well as Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.) who hit better then .300 while appearing in 32 games.
 
Sharpe rounded out his sophomore season leading the team in batting average at .356, hits with 42, runs with 40 and walks with 32. His 33 RBI ranked second on the team and he also added 18 stolen bases.
 
Sharpe was recognized as a Second Team All-Skyline Conference, a D3baseball.com Second Team All-New York Region, an ABCA/Rawlings Third Team All-New York Region and an ABCA/Rawlings New York Region Gold Glove selection in 2012.
 
Rivera rounded out the season hitting .287 for the Dolphins, leading the team in RBI with 46 and home runs with three. He totaled 33 hits in his first season with the Mount and added 28 runs scored and 16 walks. He joined Sharpe as a Second Team All-Skyline Conference selection.
 
Coogan was one of four players to hit better then .300 in 2012 for the Mount, finishing the season at .327. He closed the season with 32 hits, 23 runs scored, 28 RBI and 16 walks. He and Rivera matched the team-high in 2012 for total bases, with each recording 51.
 
LaMarr and the Dolphins will also look for contributions from Leutrim 'Tim' Hoxha (Forest Hills, N.Y.), Chris Sideli (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Tyler Rieth (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and Mike Esposito (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) as well as newcomers Joseph Senisi (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Keith Brodesser (Copiague, N.Y.), Matthew McCormack (Staten Island, N.Y.), Keith Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.), Craig Weber (Mineola, N.Y.), Eddie Santo (Staten Island, N.Y.), Steven Maio (Thornwood, N.Y.) and Steven Giustino (Old Bethpage, N.Y.).
 
Senior Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.) will anchor the pitching staff in 2013 after leading the team in nearly every category a season ago. McManus paced the staff in his junior season with four wins, 13 appearances, nine starts, a pair of complete games, 58.1 innings pitched and 53 strikeouts.
 
The Dolphins will also look for contributions from returning hurlers Michael Kuczinski (Millstone Township, N.J.), James Puma (Thornwood, N.Y.), Dan DiLascio (Yonkers, N.Y.), Zahedi Castillo (Bronx, N.Y.), Anthony Granitto (Bronx, N.Y.), Rich Dionisio (West Islip, N.Y.) and Ryan Schlichter (Southold, N.Y.).
 
LaMarr's staff will also feature Mark Peragine (Riverhead, N.Y.), Tyler Krolikowski (Massapequa, N.Y.), Anthony Gentile (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), Michael Oliva (Staten Island, N.Y.) and John McQuade (Long Beach, N.Y.).
 
Mount Saint Vincent finished the 2012 season with a 15-22 overall record and a 7-9 mark in Skyline Conference play.
