Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball squad was back in action on Monday evening and dropped a pair of league contests to Old Westbury, falling by scores of 12-0 and 10-1. Freshman
Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) drove in the Mount's only run of the day and combined to strike out seven Panthers in the circle.
After the two teams played a scoreless first two innings, the Panthers erupted for 10 runs in the top of the third of game one to give starter Alyssa Clancey all the support she would need. Old Westbury recorded seven hits in the inning and made the Mount pay for a pair of errors as only one of the 10 runs was earned.
Clancey would only allow two base runners in the game after hitting
Joanna Makayan (Queens, N.Y.) with a pitch in the first and surrendering an infield single to
Marni O'Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) in the third. She finished the game with seven strikeouts as she moved to 5-6 on the season.
Davis took the loss in the game after allowing only one earned run in 3.0 innings. She fanned three and allowed nine hits.
Courtney Keane (Yonkers, N.Y.) came on to work the final 2.0 innings and allowed one earned run on two base hits.
In game two, the Panther got a quick start with two runs in their first at-bat on a Clancey triple and a run scoring single from Jennifer Jean. The early scoring would again be enough for Clancey in the game as she evened her record at 6-6.
Mount Saint Vincent would climb back into the game in the home half of the third when it strung together three hits to push across a run and cut its deficit in half.
Leeann Cerbone (Bronx, N.Y.) started the rally with a double and later scored on a single to center from Davis.
Old Westbury would respond with eight runs in its final three at-bats after recording only two base hits. The Panthers would take advantage of four walks, a hit batter and four Dolphin miscues. Jean delivered one of the hits for Old Westbury with a run scoring triple in the sixth.
The Dolphins outhit the Panthers in game two on Monday 6-4 with Davis and Makayan each picking up a pair of safeties. Cerbone and Keane each doubled for the Dolphins with Cerbone scoring the only run of the game for the Mount.
Davis was again saddled with the loss after allowing four earned runs on four hits. She fanned four for the Dolphins in the complete game effort. Clancey finished the day with seven more punch outs in game two for Old Westbury and went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI at the plate.
The sweep sends Mount Saint Vincent to its 22
nd straight Skyline Conference loss and drops it to 6-20 on the season overall and to 0-8 in league play. The Dolphins will look to get back into the win column on Tuesday when they host York. First pitch at Van Cortlandt Park is set for 3:30 p.m.
