Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team split a pair of league games on Tuesday, downing Maritime 13-4 to snap a five game conference losing streak and then falling to the Privateers 3-1 in game two of the set. Senior
Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) had a strong start in the win, fanning nine Maritime hitters.
Mount Saint Vincent got an early lead in the opener after
Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) drove home T.J. Labile (Rockaway, N.Y.) with a two-out single to left field to push the Mount in front 1-0 in its first at-bat.
After Maritime knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the second, the Dolphins would extend their lead to four runs with four more tallies in the home half of the second inning.
Tyler Rieth (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) pushed across a run with his first double of the season, while
Vinny Todino (Eastchester, N.Y.) and
Christian Lavery (Westbury, N.Y.) also drove home runs with base hits in the frame.
After a two run fourth inning that pushed the Mount's lead to 7-1, Maritime climbed back into the contest with a three spot in the top of the sixth. Matt Jernegan and Nick Galli supplied run scoring hits for the Privateers in the inning.
Mount Saint Vincent would storm back with four more runs in the home half of the inning and padded the lead with two more in the seventh. Rivera ripped a two-run double in the sixth and
Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) and
Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.) singled in the last two runs of the ball game.
Mongelli had a strong outing as he moved to 2-4 on the season. He pitched 8.0 innings in the win, allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out nine in the game against three walks and is he is now tied for the team lead in wins.
Dan DiLascio (Yonkers, N.Y.) came on in the ninth to work a scoreless inning for the Dolphins.
Mount Saint Vincent had four players with a pair of hits in game one as they outhit Maritime 13-6. Rivera finished up 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI and Lavery went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in. Coogan and
Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) each drove in two runs for the Mount in the win.
In game two, Mount Saint Vincent was stifled by Maritime starter Christopher Myers who allowed three hits in the game. Myers carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Rivera broke up the bid and the shutout with a two-out solo home run to right field.
Myers would allow two more singles in the game as he moved to 4-0. He fanned nine Mount Saint Vincent hitters against just a pair of walks.
Joseph Longo and Joey Selmer supported Myers effort as each collected two hits with Selmer scoring a run and driving in another.
Rivera's home run pushed his team lead in RBI to 29 and
Benjamin Toro, Jr. (Bronx, N.Y.) and Sargente collected the only other two hits in the game for the Dolphins.
Matt Calandrillo (Cold Spring, N.Y.) suffered the loss for the Mount and fell to 2-3 after allowing three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings. He struck out three and walked three in his sixth appearance of the season.
Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.) came out of the bullpen and worked 3.0 scoreless innings for the Mount on Tuesday. He allowed one base hit and struck out four.
With the split, Mount Saint Vincent sits a 10-12 overall on the season and at 2-6 in Skyline Conference play. After the Easter break, Mount Saint Vincent will be back in action on April 11 when they travel to USMMA-Kings Point. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
