Dolphins Eliminated From Skyline Conference Baseball Tournament

Newburgh, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team was eliminated from the 2012 Skyline Conference Baseball Tournament on Wednesday afternoon with a 13-10 loss at fourth seeded Mount Saint Mary. Senior Christian Lavery (Westbury, N.Y.) led the team with four hits and classmate Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) drove in a team-high five runs.
 
Mount Saint Mary would answer a run in the first by the Dolphins with two of its own in the second to take an early one run lead. Vinnie Carminati singled home Michael Morelli to tie the score and then later put the Knights on top after crossing on a wild pitch with two outs in the frame.
 
Trailing 2-1 heading to the third inning, Mount Saint Vincent jumped back out in front with four tallies in the inning. Sargente drove in his second and third runs of the game with a one out single and Tyler Rieth (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) pushed the Mount in front 5-2 with a two-run, two out single to center field.
 
The Dolphins would hold on to the three run lead until the Knights exploded for seven runs in the home half of the fifth to pull in front for good in the game. Mount Saint Mary capitalized on two Mount Saint Vincent errors in the frame and also strung together five base hits.
 
Paul Cherubino delivered a two-run single push the Knights in front 6-5 and Chris Chieffo later extended the lead with another two-run safety with two men out in the inning to give the Knights a 9-5 advantage.
 
Mount Saint Mary would get right back on the board in the sixth inning when it pushed across three more runs to extend its lead to 12-5. Cherubino drove home another run in the inning and Brian McNoble drove home two runs with a single through the right side.
 
Trailing by seven heading to the eighth inning, Mount Saint Vincent climbed back into the game with three scores in their half of the stanza.  The first five batters would reach safely, including a bases loaded walk from Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.). Sargente would also drive home a run with a walk and Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.) brought the Dolphins to within 12-8 after reaching on a fielder's choice.
 
After Mount Saint Mary added an insurance run in the home half of the eighth, the Dolphins got right back to work and again loaded the bases with no one out following singles from Rieth, T.J. Laible (Rockaway, N.Y.) and Lavery.
 
Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) singled to center to drive home a run and Sargente plated his fifth run of the game with a single to bring the Dolphins to within three with one out in their final at-bat. Russ Pagano however, would retire the next two hitters to advance the Knights in the tournament.
 
Cherubino was one of four Mount Saint Mary players to drive in at least two runs in the game with his three. Cherubino, Chieffo, McNoble and John Conroy each collected two hits in the game for the Knights and Morelli and Carminati each scored three times.
 
Lavery closed out the game 4-for-6 for the Mount with two runs scored, with Laible and Gerald Amerosi (Staten Island, N.Y.) each recording three hits. Laible scored three times to lead the team and Sargente led all players with five RBI in the game.
 
Rieth also had a strong day at the plate for the Dolphins after going 2-for-4 with a run and a pair of RBI. Sharpe scored two times and drew three of the team's nine walks in the game for the Dolphins.
 
Brandon Lubrano was one of five Mount Saint Mary pitchers used and he earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief work. He allowed three hits and fanned two in his scoreless appearance for the Knights.
 
Brian Rush (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) suffered the loss for Mount Saint Vincent after working 4.1 innings on Wednesday. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits while striking out five.
 
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 15-18 overall on the season. The Dolphins will close out the 2012 season with four games next weekend starting with a non-conference game against John Jay on May 4. Time and location for the contest have yet to announced.
