Mount Saint Vincent Splits With NYU-POLY, Clinches Fifth Seed In Skyline Tournament

Riverdale, N.Y. – Behind a complete game shutout from Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.) and five RBI over two games from Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) the College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team earned a split with visiting NYU-POLY on Saturday. The Dolphins dropped the opener 5-3 before rebounding for a 7-0 game two victory.
 
The Dolphins opened a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener after Rivera drove home Christian Lavery (Westbury, N.Y.) with two outs in the opening frame. Lavery reached via a one out walk in the inning.
 
The Blue Jays would respond with three runs in the top half of the third to pull in front 3-1. Anthony Finch delivered the key blow in the inning, with a two-run single.
 
The Dolphins quickly got the score tied in the home half of the inning with a pair of runs on the strength of three hits. After T.J. Laible (Rockaway, N.Y.) and Lavery opened the frame with singles, Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) plated a run with a sacrifice and Rivera drove home his second of the game with a single that plated Lavery.
 
With the score tied 3-3, NYU-POLY broke through with single runs in the fifth and seventh to hold of the Mount. Finch drove home his third RBI of the game in the fifth, which proved to be the game winning run.
 
Tyler Do paced an 11 hit attack for NYU-POLY after going 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot. Cesar Murillas also had a big game and finished up 3-for-4 with three runs. Finch rounded out the game one win 3-for-5 with three runs driven in.
 
Mount Saint Vincent was led by two hits apiece from Lavery, Rivera and Benjamin Toro, Jr. (Bronx, N.Y.). Lavery scored a pair of runs for the Dolphins, while Rivera drove home a pair of runs.
 
Christian Conroy picked up the victory for NYU-POLY after working a complete game. He allowed two earned runs on nine base hits in the game. He struck out three and walked four in the outing.
 
Senior Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) took the loss for the Mount after surrendering four runs on nine hits. He collected four strikeouts for the Dolphins. James Puma (Thornwood, N.Y.) worked 2.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Dolphins, allowing just one hit.
 
Mount Saint Vincent rebounded in game two and put the game away early with five runs in its first two at-bats. Rivera doubled home Laible and Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) followed with a run scoring single in the first inning to give McManus all the support he would need in the game.
 
The Dolphins would tack on three more runs in the second frame, which included RBI singles from Gerald Amerosi (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Shapre.
 
Mount Saint Vincent pounded out 10 hits in game two with Rivera ripping a pair of doubles and driving in three more runs. Lavery collected two more safeties, with Amerosi going 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
 
McManus had a strong start for the Mount and he picked up the team's third shutout in its last four games. He allowed only three hits in the game and struck out nine as he picked up his team leading fourth win of the season.
 
With the split on Saturday, Mount Saint Vincent sits at 15-17 overall and 7-9 in league play. The Dolphins will open play in the Skyline Conference Tournament on Wednesday at Mount Saint Mary. Game time for the opening round of the event has yet to be announced.
