Riverdale, N.Y. – Behind strong starting pitching performances from
Brian Rush (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and
Matt Calandrillo and a combined 35 runs the College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team posted an impressive sweep of Yeshiva on Friday , winning 18-0 and 17-0.
In game one, Mount Saint Vincent put the game away early with 12 runs in the first inning. The Dolphins recorded six hits in the inning and got two-run base hits in the frame from
Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.),
Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) and
Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.).
Mount Saint Vincent finished the game with 13 base hits and was led by 3-for-4 performances from
Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and
Gerald Amerosi (Staten Island, N.Y.). Sharpe drove in three runs and scored three times in the win, while Amerosi scored twice and drove in a pair.
Sargente also had a big game for the Dolphins after going 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Coogan also picked up two hits, including a double, to go along with three runs and a pair of RBI.
Overall in the game, Mount Saint Vincent had nine base runners reach after being hit with a pitch and the Dolphins drew five walks.
Rush picked up the win on the day after working 6.0 strong innings for Mount Saint Vincent in which he allowed only two base hits. He struck out a career-high 10 batters as he moved his record on the season to 3-1.
Zahedi Castillo (Bronx, N.Y.) came on to work a clean inning in which he recorded a strikeout for the Dolphins.
Mount Saint Vincent would pick up right where it left off in game two and got on the board with a run in the first and two more in the second. The Dolphins would push the game out of reach with an eight run third in which three straight hitters were hit with a pitch. Sharpe would follow with a two-run single to push the Mount in front 11-0.
Rivera and
Benjamin Toro, Jr. (Bronx, N.Y.) each collected two hits for Mount Saint Vincent in game two on Friday, with Rivera scoring twice and driving in two runs. Sharpe picked up three more RBI for the Dolphins in game two and Amerosi scored three and drove home three in the win.
The Dolphins closed game two getting hit with five more pitches to run their season total to 72 on the season.
T.J. Laible (Rockaway, N.Y.) was plunked twice in the second game and now holds the single season record in the category with 16.
Calandrillo worked a strong start for Mount Saint Vincent as he moved to 3-4 on the year. The only hit he allowed came with two outs in the fifth inning. He picked up seven strikeouts and walked just one in his third career complete game and his first career shutout.
With the wins on Friday, Mount Saint Vincent climbs within two games of the .500 mark on the season at 14-16 overall and 6-8 in league play. The Dolphins will close out the league schedule on Saturday when they host NYU-POLY. First pitch at Van Cortlandt Park is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
