Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team earned a split on Thursday in a non-conference doubleheader with St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, falling 3-0 in game one and then rebounding for a 7-5 win in game two. Freshman
Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) took the loss in the opener, but matched her career-high with 11 strikeouts.
In game one the Lady Bears scored single runs in the first and second innings to give starter Alyson Chiaramonte all the support she would need. Chiaramonte would triple home the game winning run with two outs in the first inning and Jackie Perillo added the insurance run in the second with a two-out RBI single.
The two runs would be more then enough for Chiaramonte who allowed only three Mount Saint Vincent hits in the game. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter as she improved to 11-5 on the season.
Leeann Cerbone (Bronx, N.Y.) would pick up the Mount's first hit in the game with one out in the fourth inning and
Marni O'Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) and Davis picked up the other two safeties for the Dolphins.
Davis took the hard luck loss for Mount Saint Vincent after working her 21
st complete game of the season. She allowed only one earned run and one walk, while fanning 11. It marks the second time this season she has struck out 11 opponents and she now has recorded 127 strikeouts on the season.
Game two proved to be a different type of game as the two teams scored all 12 of the game's runs in the first two innings. The Lady Bears got off to a quick start after Caitlyn Kakavas cleared the bases with a three-run double. She would later score the team's fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Trailing 4-0 after a half inning, Mount Saint Vincent rallied for seven tallies in the home half of the frame. The Dolphins would string together four hits and take advantage of two St. Joseph's miscues to pull in front.
With two outs in the inning and two runs home,
Casey Leake (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) came through with a base hit down the right field line. Leake and
Brianna Mooney (Yonkers, N.Y.) would later score on the Lady Bear's second error of the inning to close out the scoring.
St. Joseph's would get a run back in the second when Mabel Vargas singled home Danielle Marino to cut the Mount Saint Vincent lead to 7-5.
Leading by two, Mount Saint Vincent starter
Courtney Keane (Yonkers, N.Y.) would make the lead stand and earned the win to improve to 4-3 on the season. With a fielder's choice to end the second, Keane went on to retire 11 in a row, until Cassandra Molinari singled with two outs in the sixth.
Keane finished the game allowing three earned runs on five hits and struck out four Lady Bears against just one walk. She also scored a run for the Dolphins in the seven run first inning.
Leake finished the game 1-for-3 for the Mount with a run and two RBI and O'Shea also went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Cerbone doubled for the Dolphins, stole a base and scored a run.
Joanna Makayan (Queens, N.Y.) picked up a hit and a pair of steals in the win for Mount Saint Vincent.
The game two win on Thursday snapped a five game losing streak for the Dolphins and the split moves the Mount to 9-25 overall on the season. Mount Saint Vincent will be back in action again on Friday when it plays host to Sarah Lawrence. First pitch at Van Cortlandt Park is set for 4:00 p.m.
