Purchase, N.Y. – Behind a combined 23 hits and two strong starts for
Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) and
Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.), the College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team earned an important league sweep on Saturday, winning at Purchase by scores of 8-4 and 9-1.
After the two teams each plated a run in their first at-bat in game one and Purchase jumped in front 2-1 with a run in the third, Mount Saint Vincent rallied to pull in front 5-2 with four tallies in the top of the fourth .
Sharpe pushed across the first run with a single and junior
Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.) capped the rally with a two run double with two outs in the inning.
Mongelli would make the lead stand for the Dolphins as he did not allow a run after the third inning and went on to throw 7.0 frames in his second straight strong start. He improved to 3-4 after allowing four hits and striking out five.
Eight of the nine hitters in the Mount Saint Vincent lineup recorded a hit in the opener, with
Christian Lavery (Westbury, N.Y.), Sharpe and
Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) all recording a pair of base hits.
T.J. Laible (Rockaway, N.Y.) scored two runs for the Dolphins and stole two of the team's eight bases, with Sharpe adding two runs, two RBI and two steals to the winning effort. Sargente also scored two times, while Coogan and
Tyler Rieth (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) each drove home a pair.
In the backend of Saturday's set, McManus was supported by a 12 hit attack from the Mount that saw four players record at least two hits. The junior right hander moved to 3-2 after surrendering one run on seven hits. He struck out four Purchase batters in the outing.
After the Mount jumped out to a 4-1 lead, it put the game away with a two run sixth and a three run seventh.
Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) and Sargente drove home runs in the sixth, while Sharpe added an RBI single in the seventh.
Sharpe closed out a big day with a 3-for-3 effort in game two with three runs scored. Rivera and Sargente each collected a pair of hits, with Rivera and Coogan each driving home two runs.
The Dolphins stole five more bases in the game two win, including two from Lavery and were hit with four pitches. Sharpe reached safely five times in the game after getting plunked once and walking once.
With the sweep, Mount Saint Vincent moves to 12-13 overall on the season and to 4-6 in league play. The Dolphins will look to even their record on Sunday when they play host to Farmingdale State. First pitch at Van Cortlandt Park is set for 12:00 p.m.
