Staten Island, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday, falling at Staten Island by a score of 7-3.
Leutrim 'Tim' Hoxha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and
Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) combined for five of the team's nine hits on the day.
Mount Saint Vincent fell behind early on Thursday after Staten Island put two runs on the board in each of its first three at-bats. After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Dolphins rallied to tie the score at 2-2 in the top of the second after Hoxha drove in a run with a single and
Gerald Amerosi (Staten Island, N.Y.) plated the equalizer with a run producing groundout.
Staten Island quickly responded with two more runs in the second taking advantage of a Mount Saint Vincent miscue to move in front 4-2.
Anthony Masullo (Howard Beach, N.Y.) got the Mount back in business with an RBI double in the top of the third, before Staten Island picked up all the insurance it would need with two more tallies in their half of the inning.
Hoxha finished off the game going 3-for-4 for the Mount with a double and an RBI, while Sargente finished the day 2-for-4 with a run scored.
T.J. Laible (Rockaway, N.Y.) and
Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) also scored runs for the Dolphins.
Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss for the Mount after working the first 5.0 innings. He allowed five hits and four earned runs in the outing, while picking up four strikeouts.
Brian Rush (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) worked the final three innings and allowed one run on four hits. He struck out three batters and walked one.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 3-1 overall on the season heading into the spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla. The Dolphins will be back on the field in the Sunshine State on Saturday when they play a doubleheader with Dickinson starting at 1:00 p.m.
