NJCU Final Stats
Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball squad earned a split of two league matches on Sunday, downing Yeshiva 3-1 by scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-10 and 25-8 and then falling to NJCU by scores of 15-25, 20-25 and 20-25.
Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.) recorded 20 digs against the Maccabees and
Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) put away 12 kills against the Gothic Knights.
Mount Saint Vincent got off to a sluggish start against Yeshiva and had to rally from a 9-2 deficit in the opening set. The Dolphins responded with a 9-1 run to pull in front 11-10 and used the strength of 14 kills to pick up a 25-18 win in the opening frame.
The Dolphins found themselves down big again in the second set and used a timeout after Yeshiva jumped in front 12-4. The Dolphins used a 10-1 scoring spurt to knot the score at 14-14 and then eventually pulled in front 18-17 after a Bacchi winner, but couldn't close the set. Yeshiva scored eight of the final 13 points in the stanza to knot the match at 1-1.
After the slow start, Mount Saint Vincent overpowered Yeshiva in the third and fourth sets and allowed a total and 18 points. The Dolphins hit a blistering .471 in a 25-10 set three win and closed the victory by hitting .312 in a 25-8 win in the fourth frame.
Seven different players recorded a kill against the Maccabees led by Bacchi's 14. He hit .296 in the match and posted a match-high 20 digs.
Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) closed the contest with 12 winners to go along with six digs and a pair of blocks.
James DiGiovanni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) totaled eight kills and seven digs and
Michael Sin (Hicksville, N.Y.) handed out a career-high 42 assists and recorded three total blocks.
Timothy Kolodny (Woodland Hills, Caslif.) lifted 18 digs for the Dolphins and recorded eight service aces.
For the match, Mount Saint Vincent picked up 49 kills to 12 for Yeshiva. The Dolphins also held the edge in digs 66-45, while the Maccabees picked up 6.5 total blocks to five for the Mount.
In the second match of the day, NJCU took advantage of a -.062 hitting percentage for Mount Saint Vincent in the opening set to jump out to a 1-0 lead. The Gothic Knights totaled 13 kills and hit .276 as a team in the opener.
Mount Saint Vincent rallied from the slow start to battle the Gothic Knights in a hard fought second set. After falling behind 14-10, The Dolphins ripped off seven of the next nine points to pull to within 19-17. Ecock sparked the run with a pair of kills, before the Gothic Knights closed with three straight points to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Dolphins rip off seven straight points in the early going to pull in front 9-6. The Dolphins would hold on to the lead until a 9-3 run from NJCU saw it jump out in front for the final time on the day at 19-17. The Mount would be able to get to within one point the rest of the way, before NJCU put away the last three points to close the match.
NJCU was led in the contest by eight kills from Justin Beaumont and Besmir Arsiani. Arsiani also finished the match with seven digs and four total blocks, while Beaumont lifted six digs and picked up a pair of aces.
Vin Genova led NJCU with 10 digs and Gary Preston, Jr. handed out a match-high 29 assists to go along with five digs and a kill.
Ecock led the Dolphins with 12 winners and also finished up with four digs. Bacchi put away five kills for Mount Saint Vincent and lifted eight digs and put down a pair of solo blocks.
Kolodny recorded 11 defensive digs for the Dolphins and Sin closed the match with 23 assists, two aces and four digs.
Overall, NJCU held a 31-25 edge in kills and a 39-32 advantage in digs. The Gothic Knights also won the total block battle in the contest 7-4.
With the split on Sunday, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 5-10 overall on the season and at 4-7 in the Skyline Conference. The Dolphins will look to rebound on Thursday when they head to Sarah Lawrence for a non-conference match scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
