Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Lacrosse team opened its Skyline Conference schedule on Wednesday night with a heartbreaking 6-5 loss on the road at Maritime. Matt Desimone (Congers, N.Y.) and Bruce Pappas (Montrose, N.Y.) paced the offense with two goals each and Kyle Kalibat (Oceanside, N.Y.) stopped 13 shots in goal.

The game was tightly contested throughout, with neither team holding a lead larger then two goals. After falling behind 2-1 late in the first period, the Mount got goals from Desimone and Dan Cohen (Ardsley, N.Y.) to pull in front 3-2 with just under six minutes left before halftime.

Maritime would come back to tie the score late in the second stanza as the two teams headed to the intermission tied 3-3. The Privateers would then score the first goal of the third stanza to pull back in front 4-3.

The Dolphins would regroup again to tie the score when Pappas scored his second of the game with 3:42 to play in the third quarter. The Dolphins would not be able to get over the hump as the Privateers got back-to-back goals from Kevin Winter nearly 10 minutes apart to get in front 6-4. Desimone would bring the Mount back to within a goal late, but would run out of time.

Matthew Messina scored three times for Maritime and Winter tallied twice, including the game winner. Ed Fargo led the team with six groundballs and Joe Villarreal and Greg Acker each won six face-offs.

Pappas finished the game with five groundballs in addition to his two goals, with Frank Maddaloni (Bronx, N.Y.) leading all players with six groundballs. Maddaloni, Pat McEnaney (New York, N.Y.) and Ahmed Ajao (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each finished the game with an assist.

For the game, Mount Saint Vincent was outshot 33-24 and Maritime also held a slim edge in groundballs at 31-25. The Privateers also won 12 of the 15 face-offs taken in the contest.

Kalibat, who was named the Skyline Conference Co-Player of the Week on Monday, stopped 13 shots, including five in the opening 15 minutes. He also picked up five groundballs and caused three turnovers. Nick Barbuto picked up the win for Maritime with nine saves and four groundballs.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 7-5 overall on the season and to 0-1 in league play. The Dolphins will look to even their Skyline record when they play host to Richard Stockton on Saturday. Face-off at Tibbetts Brook Park is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
