New York, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team opened Skyline Conference play on Saturday with a pair of home losses to Sage. The Dolphins were shutout in game one by a score of 7-0 and later fell in the second contest 11-3. A trio of Mount Saint Vincent players scored a run and had a hit in the backend of the set.
The two teams would play a tightly contested game one with the Gators holding a slim 1-0 leading into the fifth inning. Sage would break the game open with four tallies in the fifth, aided by three Mount Saint Vincent errors. Kelsey Newberg and Karlie Williams helped the offensive cause with runs batted in during the rally.
Newberg played a key role in the game one victory for Sage as she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in addition to picking up the win in the circle for the Gators. She earned the complete game shutout after allowing just a pair of hits to the Dolphins and striking out eight.
Williams also finished game one with two hits and drove home three runs for Sage, with Tiffany Bezio ripping a triple and scoring a run.

Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) suffered the loss in the circle, surrendering just three earned runs on eight hits. She struck out four against just one walk.
Game two on Saturday opened much the same way game one did as the two pitchers kept the other side's offense in check over the first three innings. Neither side had a base runner until Sage broke through with a pair of runs in the fourth. Newberg and Hillary Faas drove home the runs with singles.
Sage would expand its lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning with four more runs, before the Mount finally got on the board with three tallies in the home half of the fifth.
Joanna Makayan (Flushing, N.Y.) and
Marni O'Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) each recorded an RBI in the inning for the Dolphins.
The Gators responded quickly with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to break the game open. After being held without a base runner over the first three frames, the Gators closed the game scoring at least two runs in each of their final four at-bats.
Ashley Winn (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Pulice and
Blair Butler (Hicksville, N.Y>) each recorded a hit and scored a run for the Dolphins. Makayan finished up game two 1-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base and Davis also rounded out the contest 1-for-3.
Sage recorded 10 hits in the game and saw Newberg go 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Rachel Smith and Chantal Ceragioli each crossed with two runs in the game for the Gators.
Smith picked up the win for Sage and struck out nine in the process, while Davis was saddled with the loss for the Mount. She allowed three earned runs in 5.0 innings and struck out a pair.
With the sweep, Mount Saint Vincent has now dropped it last six decisions and stands at 5-11 overall on the season and 0-2 in Skyline play. The Dolphins will look to rebound on Sunday when they travel to NYU-POLY. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
