Dolphins Settle For Split With Knights

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team opened Skyline Conference play on Saturday with a split against visiting Mount Saint Mary, winning the opener 15-11 and then falling in game two 12-1. In the game one triumph seniors Christian Lavery (Westbury, N.Y.) and Vinny Todino (Eastchester, N.Y.) each drove in three runs.
 
Mount Saint Vincent got going early in the opener, plating two runs in its first at-bat with the help of a Mount Saint Mary miscue. After T.J. Laible (Rockaway, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single, he was pushed home by Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) who singled and then slide home safely after a three base error by the right fielder.
 
Mount Saint Mary quickly responded with three tallies in the top of the second to pull in front 3-2 on the strength of a two run single from Zach Kenny, before the Dolphins jumped right back in front with two tallies in the second and one more in the third. Todino gave the Dolphins a 5-3 lead with his first run batted in when he delivered Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.) with a two out single in the third.
 
Mount Saint Vincent starter Brian Rush (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) would settle in during the middle innings and after the three run third he kept the Knights off the board for the next three innings allowing just two hits over that stretch.
 
The Knights however, would break through with four tallies in the top of the sixth, collecting three hits and taking advantage of two Mount Saint Vincent errors. Mike Morelli tied the score at 5-5 with a two-run blast to right field and later pulled in front by two after scoring a pair of unearned runs, including an RBI single from Tom McNoble.
 
For the second time of the day, the Mount Saint Mary lead would be short lived as the Mount responded with a seven spot in the home half of the frame to pull in front for good. The Dolphins only needed three hits in the inning and took advantage of three walks and three hit batsmen, with two driving home runs. Todino and Lavery each plated a pair of runs with singles in the inning.
 
The Knights would score four more times over their last three at-bats, but Mount Saint Vincent used a three run eighth, keyed by a run scoring single from Lavery and an RBI double from Sharpe to seal the victory.
 
Four Mount Saint Vincent players finished the game with at least two hits, with Laible going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI and Sharpe and Todino each going 3-for-4. Todino scored three in addition to his RBI total and Sharpe scored twice and drove two home.
 
Lavery rounded out the game 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI and sophomore catcher Tyler Rieth (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) drove home two runs for the Dolphins as thy out hit the Knights 15-13.
 
Morelli had a huge game for Mount Saint Mary after he went 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs, two runs and six RBI. He was one of four Knights with multiple hits, with McNoble and Kenny each driving home a pair of runs.
 
Rush picked up his second win of the season for the Dolphins and moved to 2-0 after working 6.0 innings on Saturday. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits, while striking out three. James Puma (Thornwood, N.Y.) picked up the nine out save in the game after working the final three innings and fanning a pair of Knights.
 
In game two on Saturday, the Mount Saint Mary bats picked up right where they left off in game one and pounded out 14 more hits and 12 runs. The scoring started early for the Knights as they got all they would need with three in the first and eight more in the second.
 
John Conroy delivered a two-run single in the eight run second as the Knights recorded eight hits. Vincent Carminati, Anthony D'Agostino, and Alex Verladi all drove home two runs in the inning.
 
The Dolphins would get their only run of the game in the home half of the first after Laible led off the game with a single for the second time. He later stole second and was then driven home by a Sharpe sacrifice fly.
 
Mount Saint Vincent mustered only four hits in the game with Leutrim 'Tim' Hoxha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) going 2-for-3.
 
Verlardi paced the Mount Saint Mary attack by going 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI out of the lead0ff spot. Morelli went 3-for-4 in the second game with two runs scored, while Carminati rounded out the tilt 2-for-3 with three RBI.
 
Joe CoFrancesco moved to 2-0 for Mount Saint Mary after working the complete game win. He allowed one run on four hits and fanned five. Senior Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) took the loss for the Dolphins after allowing four earned runs on six hits in one inning of work.
 
 Michael Kuczinski (Millstone Township, N.J.) and Dan DiLascio (Yonkers, N.Y.) came out of the bullpen for Mount Saint Vincent to combine on 4.0 scoreless innings. Kuczinski fanned three in his 2.0 innings.  
 
With the plait on Saturday, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 8-7 overall on the year and 1-1 in league play. The Dolphins will be back at it on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Old Westbury. First pitch is scheduled for noon and live stats cane be found here
