Brooklyn, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team dropped its second straight contest on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-1 loss on the road at Baruch.
Christian Lavery (Westbury, N.Y.) led three Dolphins with multiple hits with a 3-for-4 effort against the Bearcats.
After two scoreless innings, Baruch jumped on the board with four runs in the home half of the third. The Bearcats strung together four hits in the inning with the big blows coming on a two-run single from Thomas Daly and a home run from Yancy Taveras.
Mount Saint Vincent would try to chip away in its half of the fourth inning when the Dolphins used a one out triple from
Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly from
Benjamin Toro, Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y.) to get on the board. The triple was Coogan's team leading second of the season, as he now leads the squad with a .455 batting average and six extra base hits.
The Dolphins would be held off the board the rest of the contest by Baruch starter Jesus Izarra. The Bearcats would close out the scoring with an insurance run in the fifth when Taveras drove in his second run of the game with one out.
Izarra spun a complete game for Baruch allowing one run on 11 hits. He struck out 10 Mount Saint Vincent hitters and did not walk a batter.
Jeff Martin (West Babylon, N.Y.) made the start and took the loss after working 3.0 innings and allowing four runs on four hits.
Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) came on to finish up with a scoreless 3.0 innings in which he struck out one.
Lavery paced the Mount's 11 hit attack by going 3-for-4. Coogan finished up 2-for-4 with the run scored and
Anthony Masullo (Howard Beach, N.Y.) went 2-for-3. With his two hits, Coogan is now tied for the team lead with four multiple hit games.
Taveras finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and two driven in and Daly closed out the game with two RBI for Baruch.
The loss is the first ever for the Dolphins at the hands of Baruch as they now stand at 3-1 all-time against the Bearcats and 7-6 overall on the season. The Mount will open Skyline Conference play on Saturday when it plays host to Mount Saint Mary. First pitch at Van Cortlandt Park is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
