Bronxville, N.Y. – Facing its second nationally ranked opponent of the season, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball squad was upended by #22 Cortland on Sunday by a score of 10-2. Junior Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.) finished the game 2-for-3 for the Mount.
 
The Red Dragons opened a 2-0 lead on Sunday after plating single runs in the first and third innings. The Dolphins would then battle back to cut their deficit in half when Coogan drove home Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) with his 10th RBI of the season.
 
Cortland wasted little time getting that run back after Mike LaTempa led off the fifth inning with his first of two home runs in the game. The Red Dragons would go on to push across two more runs in the frame on a sacrifice fly from Chris Jackson and an RBI single from Max Rosing.
 
The visitors would tack on two more runs in the sixth when LaTempa homered to left and closed the game with three runs in the ninth inning with the help of two Mount Saint Vincent miscues.
 
The Dolphins were outhit in the game 19-5 and five Cortland pitchers combined to strikeout 16 Mount Saint Vincent hitters. Mike Hughes led the way in the win with 5.1 strong innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven.
 
Coogan was the lone Mount Saint Vincent player with more then one hit and added the run batted in. Jason Rivera (Bronx, N.Y.) drove home his 18th run of the season in the eighth with a single, with Sharpe and Chris Sideli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scoring the Mount's runs.
 
Cortland had five players with at least two hits, led by LaTempa who closed the day a perfect 5-for-5 with four runs and three driven in. Matt June finished up 2-for-4 with a run and John Ardornetto, Rosing and Tim Panetta all went 2-for-3.
 
Junior right hander Mike McManus took the loss for the Mount and fell to 2-1 on the season. He allowed five runs on 12 hits while fanning three. James Puma (Thornwood, N.Y.) worked the final 3.0 innings without allowing an earned run. He allowed six base hits and struck out one.
 
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 7-5 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back on the diamond again for a non-conference game against Baruch on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch at Kingsborough Community College is slated for 3:30 p.m.
