Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday in Myrtle Beach, falling to Gettysburg by a score of 10-1 and then defeating Albertus Magnus in eight innings 4-3.
Kathleen Davis (Beacon, N.Y.) fanned seven Falcons in the win over Albertus Magnus.
In the opener against Gettysburg, Mount Saint Vincent mustered only three hits in the game, including a run scoring double from Davis to push the Mount in front 1-0 in the top of the first inning.
Gettysburg would storm to back to take the lead with three runs in the third and fourth innings and then a four spot in the fifth. The big blow in the four-run fifth inning was a bases loaded triple from Joy Halfours.
Marni O'Shea (White Plaines, N.Y.) and
Courtney Keane (Yonkers, N.Y.) picked up the other hits for the Dolphins against the Bullets, with O'Shea crossing with the Mount's only run of the contest.
Davis made the start in the circle and worked 4.0 innings, allowing seven earned runs on five hits. She struck out one hitter and walked three in taking the loss.
Halfours finished up 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI in the win for Gettysburg. Maggie McGuire drove in a pair of runs for the Bullets and Taylor Snyder earned the win after fanning nine and allowing just the three base hits.
Mount Saint Vincent would rebound in its second game of the day and matched its win total from the 2011 season with the victory over the Falcons. Davis picked up the win for the Dolphins and just missed her career-high for strikeouts after whiffing seven Falcons in the game. She did not allow an earned run in the contest and also scored a run for the Mount.
After the Falcons jumped in front 1-0 in the first inning, the Dolphins rallied for a run in the second and two more in the third to move in front 3-1. Keane drove home both runs in the third for Mount Saint Vincent with a single.
The Falcons would come back to knot the score at 3-3 in the fifth inning with a pair of unearned runs after taking advantage of three Dolphin miscues. Brittany Urciuoli drove home the second run with a single off of Davis.
The game would remain tied until the eighth inning when the international tie breaker was put into effect. After Davis worked a scoreless top half of the inning, the Mount was able to push across the game winning run when
Ashley Winn (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove home the winning run after reaching on a fielder's choice with two outs and the bases loaded.
The Dolphins outhit the Falcons in the tilt 6-5, with
Joanna Makayan (Queens, N.Y.) going 2-for-3 with a run scored and Keane going 3-for-4 with a run and the two driven in.
With the split on Tuesday the Dolphins stand at 4-3 overall on the season. The Mount will be back in action again on Wednesday when it takes on Gordon and Gettysburg starting at 9:30 a.m.
