Dolphins Fall To Host Cardinals, Mount Olive At York Classic

Jamaica, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team opened play at the York Men's Volleyball Classic on Friday with a pair of 3-0 losses. The Dolphins were defeated by Mount Olive by scores of 25-15, 25-8 and 25-12 before dropping the York decision by scores of 25-20, 26-24 and 25-20.
 
Against York the Dolphins got off to a 3-0 start in the opening set keyed by a kill from Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.) and a service ace from Michael Sin (Hicksville, N.Y.). Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) would push the Mount in front 4-1 with his first kill of the match, before York ran off eight straight points to pull in front 9-4.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would not be able to recover from the run and would not hold a lead again in the set. The Dolphins would get as close as two points three times the rest of the way, but York closed on a 4-0 run to take the opening stanza and pull in front 1-0 in the match.
 
The second set featured seven ties, but only one lead change as the Dolphins again jumped out 6-2 lead after a service ace from Holiday. The Mount would hold on to the lead until a 6-2 spurt from the Cardinals knotted the score at 17-17. Mount Saint Vincent would regain leads of 18-17 and 19-18 in the set, but York again closed strong and rallied for three of the last four points in the frame to take a 2-0 lead.
 
York would take early control in the third set and scored six of the first seven points. The Mount would put together a 5-0 run to get to within 22-19 late in the stanza but would not be able to get closer then three points the rest of the way as York earned the sweep.
 
Bacchi and Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each equaled the match-high in kills with eight on the night. Bacchi added three aces and four digs, while Ecock rounded out the night with four digs and a block.
 
Sin handed out 14 assists against the Cardinals to go along with two kills and an ace and Timothy Kolodny (Woodland Hills, Calif.) lifted six digs for the Dolphins.
 
York was led by eight kills from Edner Geffard who also posted eight digs for the Cardinals. Glenn Vargas closed the contest with a match-high 24 assists with Bryan Williams and Jhonnattan Fernandez each recording a pair of blocks.
 
For the Mount Olive match, statistics will be included and posted when they become available.
 
Following Friday's results, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 6-12 overall on the season. The Dolphins will conclude play at the York Classic on Saturday when they take on Gallaudet at 10:00 a.m. and Medgar Evers at 2:00 p.m.
