Reading, Pa. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Lacrosse team had its two game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon after a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in overtime at Alvernia.
Ahmed Ajao (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with two points to go along with six groundballs.
Mount Saint Vincent jumped in front 2-0 in the game after
Rowan Frederick (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Ajao netted unassisted goals just over a minute apart in the opening period. Alvernia'a Jared Toll would slice the Crusader deficit in half with a goal at 5:18 of the first quarter to close out the scoring in the opening 30 minutes.
After a scoreless second quarter, Mount Saint Vincent went to the intermission with the one goal lead and a slim edge in shots at 10-9 and in groundballs at 19-15.
Coming out of halftime, Alvernia tied the score at 2-2 when Jon Lozoskie buried a feed from Toll at the 9:32 mark of the third quarter.
Dan Cohen (Ardsley, N.Y.) quickly responded for the Dolphins to push them back in front off a feed from Ajao, before Brian Ray knotted the score again for the Crusaders with 23 ticks left in the period.
Each team would pick up a goal in the fourth, with
Frank Maddaloni (Bronx, N.Y.) scoring his first career marker at the 7:20 mark of the quarter before Ray forced the extra period with his second of the game with just under two minutes left in regulation. The Crusaders would complete the comeback when Toll found the back of the cage just over a minute into the extra period for his second tally of the day.
The Dolphins had four different players finish with one goal and Ajao picked up the team's only assist.
Matt Desimone (Congers, N.Y.) led the team with seven groundballs, while
Joe Esposito (Bethpage, N.Y.) and
Larry Caputo (Hicksville, N.Y.) each caused a pair of turnovers.
Ray and Toll both posted three points on two goals and an assist for Alvernia with Lozoskie adding a goal and a helper. Lozoskie also led the team with 13 groundballs and Daniel Frantz won four of the team's five face-offs.
Sophomore goalie
Kyle Kalibat (Oceanside, N.Y.) finished the day with 12 saves for the Dolphins, including four each in the second and third quarters. Kevin Shupp made 16 stops for Alvernia, including six in the third stanza.
Mount Saint Vincent held a 26-25 edge in shots on the day and a 39-32 advantage in groundballs. The Dolphins also won six of the 11 face-offs with
Derek Wilson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) going 6-for-10.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 2-2 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Sunday when they tangle with Hilbert with face-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
