Union, N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team had its two match winning streak snapped on Wednesday with a 3-1 loss at league rival Kean. The Dolphins fell in the contest by set scores of 25-23, 16-25, 13-25 and 19-25.
Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) finished off a career-high 10 kills in the match.
Mount Saint Vincent got off to a fast start on Tuesday in taking the first set by two points. The Dolphins hit .280 as a team and scored five of the final eight points of the set to open an early 1-0 lead.
The Dolphins improved their hitting percentage in the second set, committing just three errors on their way to hitting .304. Kean also had a strong set and hit a sizzling .604 in the second frame. The Cougars used a five point run early after the Dolphins opened a 1-0 lead and closed the stanza with four of the final five points overall.
The Mount saw its hitting percentage fall in each of the final two sets against Kean, hitting .037 in the third and -.045 in the final frame. Kean continued to be strong on the attack and hit .579 in the third stanza and .312 in the fourth. In the three sets it won in the match, Kean recorded 45 winners and committed just eight errors.
Overall in the contest, the Cougars put away 55 winners and hit .412 as a team. Christian Portera led Kean with 17 kills and an impressive .583 hitting percentage. Steve Vahalla finished the night with 16 kills for Kean and hit an even .500.
Tom Kemmerle paced Kean with eight digs and Alex Barnhard equaled the match-high with 33 assists. Kyle Farley also turned in a strong effort with five total blocks for the Cougars.
Senior captain
Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.) led Mount Saint Vincent with a team-high 13 kills to go along with eight digs and a total block. Holiday reached double-figures in kills for the first time in his career with 10 and he hit an efficient .353 on the night. He also recorded a team-high three total team blocks.
Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished off eight kills on the night and picked up an ace and a pair of digs.
Michael Sin (Hicksville, N.Y.) handed out 33 helpers on the night and also lifted four digs for the Dolphins.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 2-3 overall on the season and to 1-2 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back on the floor again with Kean on Saturday when they tussle with the Cougars and NYU-POLY. The Dolphins will kick-off the quad match in Brooklyn at 2:00 p.m.
