Purchase, N.Y.  –In the first meeting between the College of Mount Saint Vincent and Manhattanville since the 2008 season, the Valiants used a strong second half performance to score a 13-6 victory over the Dolphins on Saturday afternoon. Dan Cohen (Ardsley, N.Y.) and Bruce Pappas (Montrose, N.Y.) led the offensive attack for the Dolphins with three points each.
 
Manhattanville opened the scoring with the first two tallies of the afternoon inside the first four minutes of play. The Mount would break through at the 3:21 mark of the opening period to slice its deficit in half on Ahmed Ajao's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) first marker of the season.
 
The Valiants answered with the next three goals to pull in front 5-1, before the Mount stormed back with three of its own to get to within 5-4 heading into halftime. Rowan Frederick (Brooklyn, N.Y.) opened the run for the Dolphins at the 11:36 mark of the second quarter, before Pappas netted back-to-back goals to get the Dolphins back to within a goal. All three tallies game with the man advantage.
 
Over the first 30 minutes of play, Mount Saint Vincent held a 24-18 advantage in shots and sophomore goalie Kyle Kalibat (Oceanside, N.Y.) made seven saves.
 
Coming out of halftime, the two teams traded goals with Cohen netting his first of the season with just under seven minutes to play in the third quarter. His goal answered a Bill Motherway tally for Manhattanville who opened the scoring in the second half at 9:27 of the third.
 
Leading 6-5 at the midway point of the third quarter, the Valiants scored the next seven goals to take a commanding 13-5 lead. Motherway scored twice over that stretch and Tom Tarczali capped the scoring for Manhattanville with 1:18 to play in the contest.
 
The Valiants outscored the Dolphins 8-2 in the second half, including 6-1 in the fourth quarter as they moved to 5-0 all-time against the Mount.
 
Mount Saint Vincent finished the afternoon with five different goal scorers, four players with a point and three players with at least two points. Pappas finished the day with a pair of goals and an assist and also led the Mount with nine groundballs.
 
Cohen finished the day with a marker and a pair of helpers to go along with a groundball. Ajao added an assist to his goal and also picked up three groundballs. Larry Caputo (Hicksville, N.Y.) had a strong day on defense for the Dolphins after scooping six groundballs and leading the team with two caused turnovers.
 
Brian D'Iorio led Manhattanville on Saturday with a five point effort on the strength of four goals and an assist. He also picked up a pair of groundballs for the Valiants.
 
Brendan Kuntz had a strong day with a pair of goals and Jeb Miller rounded out a solid all-around effort with a goal, an assist and team-highs in groundballs with seven, caused turnovers with three and face-off wins with 10.
 
Kalibat finished off the day for Mount Saint Vincent with 13 saves and four groundballs. His counterpart from Manhattanville, Dom Poletto, stopped 17 shots and totaled three groundballs.
 
For the game, Mount Saint Vincent held the edge in shots 41-40 and groundballs 44-42. Mount Saint Vincent went 9-for-22 in face-offs on Saturday with Derek Wilson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and John Petito (Staten Island, N.Y.) each winning four.
 
The Mount went a perfect 3-for-3 in extra man chances against Manhattanville and was successful on 23 of its 29 clearing opportunities. The Dolphins were also perfect when a man down, holding the Valiants to a 0-for-5 mark with the extra man.
 
The season opening loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 0-1 overall. The Dolphins will look to even their record on March 3 when they open the home schedule against Cobleskill. Face-off at Gaelic Park in Riverdale is set for 7:00 p.m.
