Springfield, Mass. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team was upended on Friday night on the road at #2 Springfield by a score of 3-0. The Pride took the match from the visiting Dolphins by scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-10. Senior
Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) led the Mount with seven of the team's 17 kills.
Springfield got off to a fast start on Friday and hit a red-hot .647 in the opening set, committing just one attack error in 17 total attempts. The Pride opened a 14-3 lead to start the match and allowed Mount Saint Vincent consecutive points in the set just twice.
Mount Saint Vincent would take its only lead of the night to open the second set after a Springfield service error pushed the Dolphins in front 1-0. From there the Pride ripped off the next five points and did not allow the Mount closer then three points the rest of the frame.
In the third and deciding set, the Dolphins and Pride traded points until an 8-0 Springfield run broke a 2-2 tie. The Pride closed the set hitting .389 on the way to its ninth victory of the season.
Mount Saint Vincent closed the night hitting -.031 after committing 19 service errors and recording 17 kills. Sargente posted his seven winners and also added a pair of assists and five digs.
Senior
Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.) put away five kills for the Dolphins on Friday. He also recorded two of the team's three service aces and lifted three digs.
Michael Sin (Hicksville, N.Y.) handed out 12 assists for the Mount and
Roosevelt Castillo (Bronx, N.Y.) and Sargente each collected a total block.
Springfield was paced on the night by seven kills and a 1.000 hitting percentage from Jimmy O'Leary. Mike Becker led all players with 18 assists in the match, while Ryan Lilley lifted a match-high six digs.
Overall on the night, the Pride hit .434 as a team and totaled 30 kills while committing only seven errors. Springfield also posted 6.5 total team blocks and had three players with at least two, including Mike Freytag who totaled three. Jeff Gutmann also had a strong night after posting eight of the team's 13 aces.
The loss sends Mount Saint Vincent to 3-6 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look to bounce back on Wednesday night when they play host to league rival Sage. The match at the Sharp Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
