Troy, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team opened Skyline Conference play on Sunday with a split against Sage and Purchase. The Mount was swept by the host Gators by set scores of 18-25, 16-25 and 17-25 and then rebounded for a three set victory over Purchase by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-17.
In the first match of the day against Sage, Mount Saint Vincent had a trio of players record six kills to lead the team.
Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.),
Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) and Tim Kolodny (Woodland Hills, Calif.) each matched the team-high in winners against the Gators.
Bacchi closed out a strong all-around match by matching the team-high with eight digs, joining
Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) as team leaders in the category. Sargente also totaled four kills in the contest.
Senior
Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished off the Skyline opener with four winners for the Dolphins to go along with a team-high three total blocks. He also picked up one of the team's three service aces, with Kolodny and
Michael Sin (Hicksville, N.Y.) each also recording one.
Serving as the team's primary setter, Sin handed out 23 assists for the Dolphins on Sunday against Sage. He also picked up one kill and a pair of defensive digs for the Mount.
Overall in the match, Mount Saint Vincent hit .141 as a team after totaling 27 kills. Sage picked up 6.0 total team blocks in the match to 2.5 for the Mount and digs in the contest were even at 23 apiece.
The Gators received a match-high 15 kills from Spencer Hilland, who hit .370 for the match and also totaled a pair of total blocks. Kyle Ray led all players in the contest with 31 assists, while Scott Fitzgerald picked up nine kills and three service aces.
Sage hit an efficient .355 on the afternoon against the Mount, committing just 12 attack errors in 76 total chances. Connor Thompson finished the day with four of the team's 6.0 total team blocks.
Mount Saint Vincent rebounded in the second match of the day to earn its first win of the season over the Panthers. The Mount hit a blistering .304 as a unit and picked up 35 kills to just 17 for Purchase.
Sargente led the Dolphins in the win with a season-high 15 kills and hit a red-hot .481. He committed just a pair of attack errors in 27 total attempts. Sargente also added an ace and five digs in the victory.
Bacchi continued his steady early season play for the Dolphins with eight more kills and also hit an efficient .375 against Purchase. He led all players in the match with five service aces and also lifted eight digs.
Holiday and Sin also made significant contributions to the win against Purchase on Sunday. Holiday posted a career-high seven kills for the Dolphins to go along with a pair of total blocks, while Sin finished with 29 assists, five digs and two blocks.
Purchase was paced by eight kills from Kevon Kareem-Bruce on Sunday who also lifted six of the team's 21 digs. Alex Billen-Calhoun finished the contest with a match-high 33 assists for the Panthers.
The split on Sunday moves Mount Saint Vincent to 1-2 overall on the season and to 1-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will look to even their record on February 2 when they play host to CCNY. The match at the Peter Jay Sharp Center is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
