Dolphins Dealt Heartbreaking Five Set Loss To Lehman In Season Opener

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team was handed a hard fought 3-2 loss to visiting Lehman on Thursday night in the team's 2012 season opener. The Lightning took the tilt by scores of 14-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 11-15. Senior captain Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.) recorded a double-double for the Dolphins, while classmate Michael Sin (Hicksville, N.Y.) handed out 38 assists.
 
After falling behind 11-2 in the first set, the Dolphins battled back to 16-13 following a kill by Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) and a service ace from Bacchi. The Dolphins would not be able to get any closer then three points the rest of the set, with Lehman scoring eight of the final nine points of the stanza.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would rebound to tie the match at 1-1 in the second set after hitting .200. The Lightning struggled in the second set, hitting just .111 as a unit, committing seven errors. The Dolphins rallied from 22-18 down in the frame and scored six of their final seven points on Lehman miscues. Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) closed the set with a big solo block on an attack from Brian Francisco.
 
Both teams had a strong third set, with each side hitting better then .300. Lehman collected 16 kills and hit a strong .344 in the third and the Mount finished with 13 winners and hit a blistering .364. The teams would trade tallies until Lehman broke a 7-7 tie and took the lead for good in the set.
 
The Dolphins would battle back from a one set deficit for a second time in the fourth after leading wire-to-wire. The Mount grabbed a 20-13 lead and held Lehman off down the stretch to knot the match once again at 2-2.
 
Lehman took control of the fifth set early on and opened a 6-0 lead out of the gate. The Dolphins used a five point run late in the set to get to within 11-10, before the Lightning closed with a 4-1 run, including three straight kills to end the match.
 
Bacchi paced the Dolphins with 15 winners and rounded out a double-double with 12 digs. He also led the team with three of the team's six service aces and also notched a total block.
 
Newcomer Timothy Kolodny (Woodland Hills, Calif.) led the team with 17 digs to go along with six kills and a pair of blocks. Sargente also reached double-figures in digs with 10 and finished off eight kills.
 
Sin totaled two kills for Mount Saint Vincent and led the way with 38 helpers. He lifted seven digs for the Dolphins and also added a pair of total blocks.
 
Ecock opened the 2012 season in strong fashion for Mount Saint Vincent after posting eight winners and hitting an even .300. He also posted a pair of aces and recorded two total blocks. Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) started his career off with six kills and a team-high four blocks.
 
Lehman was paced by 17 kills from Luis Colon and 14 winners from Manuel Bonilla. Colon also totaled a match-high 24 digs, while Miguel Gallardo handed out a match-high 47 assists to go along with 16 digs.
 
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 0-1 overall on the season. The Dolphins will open Skyline Conference play on Sunday at Sage with a pair of matches. The Mount will take on the host Gators and Purchase starting at noon.
