, N.Y.Senior Fernando Suriel (Yonkers, N.Y.) homered twice, including a grand slam, as Mount Saint Vincent settled for a split at Maritime on Friday with a 13-4 game two win. In game one the Privateers picked up a 6-4 win behind 7.2 strong innings from Kurt Niemeyer.

The Dolphins got off to a quick start in game one, scoring single runs in their first two at bats to take an early 2-0 lead. The first run was pushed across after James Labartino (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored from second on an infield hit from John McManus (Queens, N.Y.). In the second Vinny Todino (Eastchester, N.Y.) singled up the middle to send Suriel home.

Maritime got on the board and grabbed a lead it would not five back with four tallies in the third inning. The Privateers strung together three hits in the inning and also used a pair of Mount Saint Vincent errors to grab the lead. Joey Semler delivered the big hit in the inning with a bases loaded double down the left field line with two outs.

The Privateers added on two important insurance runs in the fifth inning to expand their lead to 6-2 before the Mount battled back in the late stages of the contest. The Dolphins scored in the sixth when Mike Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) crossed on a wild pitch and then got a run closer in the eighth when Suriel drove home John McManus (Queens, N.Y.) on a sacrifice fly to right.

Mount Saint Vincent would go on to get the tying run into scoring position in the top of the ninth when it loaded the bases. Ryan Simpson wiggled out of the jam and picked up his second save of the season when he got Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) to fly out to end the threat.

The Dolphins outhit the Privateers in game one 10-7 with Pope going 4-for-5 with a run scored. McManus and Suriel each finished with two hits for the Mount, with Suriel and Todino picking up the only RBI for Mount Saint Vincent in the game.

Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent in game one after allowing six runs, only two earned, on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work. He struck out three and walked three in the outing. James Puma (Valhalla, N.Y.) came on to work 2.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out three.

Niemeyer earned the win for Maritime and moved to 4-1 on the season after throwing 7.2 innings and allowing four runs on nine hits. He struck out a pair and walked two for Maritime. Simpson allowed one hit and fanned two in 1.1 innings to pick up the save.

The Mount Saint Vincent offense came up big in the backend of the set on Friday, pushing across 13 runs and collecting six extra base hits. After falling behind 1-0 early on in game two, the Dolphins went on to score in five of their final six at bats in the game.

After falling behind by a run, Suriel homered to center in the second to tie the score before the Dolphins scored four runs in the third. Suriel was again the hero after he connected on his second home run of the game, this time a grand slam to push the Dolphins in front 5-1.

The Privateers inched closer with a run in the bottom of the third, but three more runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth secured the win for the Mount. Labartino would close out the scoring for the Mount in the seventh inning when he connected on his second home run of the season.

Four Mount Saint Vincent players each recorded two hits in game two, with Suriel going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI. Labartino finished 2-for-5 with a triple and home run to go along with three runs and two RBI. Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Todino each finished with two hits and two runs for the Dolphins.

Labartino's two hits in game two gives him 145 for his career and leaves him one hit from tying the career record at Mount Saint Vincent. His 41 hits thus far also rank as the sixth best single season in program history.

Matt Calandrillo (Cold Spring, N.Y.) worked his second complete game of the season and allowed four runs on six hits. He struck out eight for the Dolphins against just three walks. Trevor Canella took the loss for Maritime after allowing six earned runs in 3.2 innings.

The split moves Mount Saint Vincent to 14-18 overall on the season and to 10-6 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will return to action again on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Western Connecticut. First pitch in Danbury, Conn. is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
