Old Westbury, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team split a key Skyline Conference doubleheader on Thursday night with Old Westbury. The Dolphins rallied from 3-0 down to win game one 4-3, but fell 17-0 in game two of the set. Senior Mike Pope drove home the game winner in the opener and added one of three Mount Saint Vincent hits in the backend of the set.
After falling behind 3-0 in game one, Mount Saint Vincent sliced its deficit to just one run in the fourth when in strung together four hits in the inning. Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) and Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.) each drove home a run in the inning.
The Dolphins got even with the Panthers in the sixth after Vinny Todino (Eastchester, N.Y.) drove home Fernando Suriel (Yonkers, N.Y.) who ripped a two out double after the Mount had a runner cut down at the plate earlier in the inning.
Mount Saint Vincent completed the comeback in the seventh with the final run of the contest. After Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) led off with a walk he was moved to third on a wild pitch and sacrifice bunt from James Labartino (Holbrook, N.Y.). Pope followed with a sharp groundball through the middle to push the Dolphins in front for the first time of the game.
Pope, Sargente and Suriel each finished game one with two hits, with Suriel collecting his double and Sargente ripping a triple. Suriel and Pope also scored a run in the game, with Pope being the only player for the Mount wit a run and an RBI.
After allowing three runs in the first inning, Mike Trainor (Patterson, N.Y.) settled in to work 7.0 strong innings to pick up the win. He allowed two earned runs and stuck out one. Labartino earned the save after working a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
The Mount Saint Vincent offense was shut down in game two on Thursday, finishing with just three hits. Pope, Sargente and Chris Sideli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up the only hits for the Dolphins in game two.
Old Westbury finished with 16 hits and had six players with at least a pair of safeties. Anthony Orsano went 3-for-4 with three runs and a pair of RBI. Three players scored three runs and the first five hitters in the lineup drove in two runs.
Chris Sanabria earned the win with the 7.0 complete game. He walked three and fanned six in the outing. Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.) suffered the loss after working 3.0 innings. He allowed only two earned runs and walked thee batters.
The split on Thursday moves Mount Saint Vincent to 13-17 overall on the season and to 9-5 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will close out their league schedule on Friday when they travel to Maritime. First pitch with the Privateers is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
