Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team had its seven match winning streak snapped and dropped its first Skyline Conference regular season match since February 23, 2008 after a 3-2 loss at Bard. The Dolphins had three players with at least 10 kills, with David Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) posting 30. Senior Michael Quinn (Wantagh, N.Y.) handed 56 assists for the Mount.
In the first set, a 34-32 Mount Saint Vincent victory, the Dolphins fought off four set points by the Raptors and received three kills from Guerrero. The 5-9 outside hitter eventually won the set for the Dolphins with another kills to give the Mount a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, Mount Saint Vincent again had to rally from behind after trailing 22-19. A Guerrero winner pushed the Dolphins in front 24-23, but after Bard knotted the score at 25-25, Guerrero and Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.) finished off back-to-back kills to give the Mount a 2-0 edge.
After the second set, Bard got back in the match after hitting .324 in the third set. The Raptors committed just two attack errors and were able to hold off a Mount Saint Vincent rally late. Bard evened the match in the fourth set after the two teams were tied 12 times. After leading 22-19, the Dolphins allowed a Bard rally to tie the score at 25-25 and the Raptors used a service error and attack error by the Mount to take the set 27-25.
In the deciding frame, Bard ran off four straight points to break a 5-5 tie. Up 13-9 an attack error by the Dolphins set up a service ace from the Raptors on set point to secure the come-from-behind victory.
The loss on Tuesday is the first since the Dolphins lost to Bard during the 2008 season and the Dolphins have never dropped a Skyline match to another opponent. The two teams have won the first three Skyline Conference Championships, with the Raptors taking the crown in 2008 and 2010.
Guerrero finished the night one kill shy of his career-high with 30 winners and also registered 13 digs and three total blocks. Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) continued his strong recent play with 14 winners and a .379 hitting percentage. He also lifted eight digs and totaled six blocks.
Bacchi was the third Dolphin in double-figures in kills with 10 in the match to go along with 20 digs and four block assists. Michael Sin (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with 26 digs and Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) added 13 digs and six kills.
Quinn led Mount Saint Vincent with a season-high 56 assists and also hit .318 on the strength of seven kills. Sin added seven more helpers in the match as the Dolphins assisted on 65 of their 69 kills.
Bard was led by Nick Chan who totaled 24 kills and 11 digs in the match. Max Howard posted 15 kills for the Raptors and lifted 19 digs, while Andrew Cortrite led all players with 28 digs. Henry Kasiske finished the night with a match-high 60 assists for Bard.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 12-3 overall on the season and to 6-1 against Skyline Conference opponents. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Thursday night when they travel to cross-town rival Lehman. The match with the Lightning is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
