Bronx, N.Y. – Sophomore left hander James Puma (Valhalla, N.Y.) fired 7.0 innings without allowing an earned run and senior Mike Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) drove in five runs as the College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team snapped a three game losing streak with a 14-4 win over Lehman on Wednesday. Puma earned his first win of the season and Pope was one of three Dolphins with multiple hits.
Mount Saint Vincent broke the game open early on Wednesday, plating six runs in the bottom of the first inning. After a two run double from James Labartino (Holbrook, N.Y.) drove home Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Vinny Todino (Eastchester, N.Y.), Pope connected on his first career home run, a three run shot, to push the Dolphins in front 5-0.
After adding the sixth run in the first, the Dolphins added on to their lead with a pair of tallies in the fourth, one more in the sixth and then four in the sixth. Tyler Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) closed out the scoring for the Dolphins in the eighth with an RBI single.
The six run first inning was all the support that Puma would need on Wednesday. He faced the minimum over the first six innings, allowing two hits but erasing those runners with a pair of double play groundballs. Puma allowed two unearned runs in the seventh and two hits. For the day he worked 7.0 innings, allowing four hits and two unearned runs. He did not walk a batter and fanned three.
Mike Pope finished the day 3-for-4 with his round tripper, a pair of runs scored and five RBI. Labartino also went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored and Sharpe went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. John McManus (Queens, N.Y.) scored a pair of runs for the Dolphins and Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) added an RBI double and three runs scored.
The win on Wednesday improves the Mount's overall record to 8-13 on the season. The Dolphins will return to league play on Friday morning when they play host to Yeshiva. First pitch with the Maccabees at Maritime College is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
