Jamaica, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Softball team got into the win column for the first time in 2011 with a road split at York on Tuesday afternoon. The Dolphins dropped the first game 8-0, but then rebounded to score a season-high 12 runs in a 12-2 victory in game two. Leeann Cerbone (Bronx, N.Y.) drove in four runs in the win and was one of three Dolphins with two hits in the game.
Mount Saint Vincent was two hit in the opener, with the Cardinals recording eight hits in the contest. Thessaly Belizario led the York attack by going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple to go along with a pair of runs scored and two RBI. Chiquita Greene also recorded a pair of hits for the Cardinals in the opener.
The Dolphins received hits from Ashley Winn (Queens, N.Y) and Rosario Gaton (Bronx, N.Y.). Winn took the loss in the circle for the Mount after working 4.1 innings and allowing just three earned runs on seven hits.
Michelle Deleon earned the win for York in game one after working 5.2 innings of shutout ball and allowing just the two singles. Deleon did not walk a batter and recorded four strikeouts for the Cardinals.
In game two, Mount Saint Vincent erupted for season-highs in runs with 12 and in base hits with nine. The Dolphins scored in each at-bat in game two, including a four run fifth inning.
Mount Saint Vincent opened a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first after Marni O'Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) drove in Nora Chivelly (Suffern, N.Y.) with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Cerbone.
The Mount kept the pressure on with a single run in the second, two more in the third and then broke the game open with three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth. The four run fifth was highlighted by a run scoring triple from Joanna Makayan (Queens, N.Y.).
Cerbone finished the game 2-for-3 and also scored two runs in addition to driving in four. Chivelly scored a pair of runs for the Dolphins and Makayan went 2-for-3 with her triple, scoring two runs and driving in a pair.
Marni O'Shea rounded out the trio with two hits after going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. O'Shea led the Mount with three runs scored in the win and also drove in one. Cerbone and O'Shea also swiped a pair of bases for the Dolphins in game two.
Winn picked up her first win of the season after working the complete game. In 5.0 innings she allowed two runs on six base hits. She walked four and fanned three for the Dolphins.
The split moves Mount Saint Vincent to 1-11 overall on the season. The Dolphins will continue their busy week on Wednesday when they travel to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn for another non-conference doubleheader. The set with the Lady Bears is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
