Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. – In search of its second Skyline Conference Championship, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team was upended by Bard in the championship match by a score of 3-0 on Sunday. The Mount advanced to the final by downing Sage 3-1 by scores of 26-24, 25-22, 24-26 and 25-23. Senior David Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) paced the Dolphins with 41 kills over the two matches.
In the semifinal against the Gators, Guerrero led all players with 26 kills and was one of only two Dolphins to register double figures in the category. Guerrero also added a service ace, seven digs and four total blocks to the winning effort.
Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.) continued his efficient play by registering 10 kills and hitting .476. He did not commit an attack error in 21 attempts and also posted a pair of aces and nine digs. Classmate Michael Sin (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with 18 digs in the match and also contributed four kills.
Senior setter Michael Quinn (Wantagh, N.Y.) finished the day with one kill and a match-high 47 assists. He rounded out a strong match with eight digs and two total blocks. Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed seven kills and nine digs for the Mount.
The Gators were paced by three in double figures in kills with Spencer Hillard and Jake Douty each posting 12. Cory Gransbury handed out 40 assists t lead Sage and Matt Bynon led all players in the match with 36 digs.
Overall, Mount Saint Vincent hit .333 as a unit in the match, but Sage finished with 53 kills to 51 for the Mount. Sage committed five more attack errors then the Dolphins in nearly 50 more attempts. Digs in the match were even at 54-54 and Sage held the edge in total blocks 18-13.5.
For the fourth straight year, the Dolphins advanced to the title match to meet Bard and for the third time the Raptors came away with the crown. Bard took Sunday's match in three straight, beating the Dolphins by scores of 15-25, 19-25 and 22-25.
Guerrero was again the team leader in kills for Mount Saint Vincent with 15 to go along with eight digs. Bacchi posted 11 winners in the contest and hit an efficient .375. He also totaled six digs and a service ace for the Dolphins. The duo combined for 26 of the 31 kills for the Mount in the match.
Quinn assisted on 25 of the Dolphins' 31 kills in the match and also added six digs. Sin led the way again in digs in the title tilt with 13 for Mount Saint Vincent and Ecock paced the team with four total blocks.
Bard had only one player in double figures in the kill category with Nick Chan posting 14 on his way to earning Tournament MVP honors. Henry Kasiske posted a match-high 32 assists and Andrew Cortrite led all players in the match with 14 digs.
Bard totaled 36 kills in the match to 31 for Mount Saint Vincent and also held a slight edge in digs 45-44. Mount Saint Vincent took the advantage in total team blocks 8-7 on Sunday.
With the split on Sunday, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 16-6 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to action on Tuesday night when they host St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in the final home match of the season. Prior to the match the three seniors on the squad will be honored. Match time on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
