Brooklyn, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team scored 53 runs in 16 innings on Sunday on its way to a doubleheader sweep at NYU-POLY. The Dolphins took the first game 26-5 and then completed the sweep with a 27-6 victory in game two. Mike Esposito (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Benjamin Toro, Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y.) each drove in four runs in game one and Mike McManus (Bayside, N.Y.) and Matt Calandrillo (Cold Spring, N.Y.) picked up the victories on the hill.
Game one was tight until the Dolphins plated 11 runs in the sixth inning on Sunday and then nine more in the top half of the ninth. The Dolphins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on a two run single from Esposito, before the Blue Jays knotted the score at 2-2 in the home half of the third.
Ahead 5-3 heading to the sixth, the Dolphins broke the game wide open when they pushed across 11 runs on the strength of nine hits. The Mount also took advantage of five NYU-POLY errors in the frame. The Mount had similar success in the ninth when it pounded out eight hits on its way to nine runs to cruise home with the game one victory.
Overall in the game, 15 Dolphins recorded a hit with Fernando Suriel (Yonkers, N.Y.), Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) and Toro, Jr. also posting three in the game. Suriel scored four times in game one for the Dolphins, while Mike Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and four runs scored.
McManus picked up the win for Mount Saint Vincent after working 6.0 strong innings. He allowed three earned runs on 10 hits for the Dolphins and struck out 11 against just one walk. Anthony Granitto (Bronx, N.Y.) picked up the save after working 3.0 innings in relief and allowing one run on two hits.
The Mount Saint Vincent offense did not let up in game two as it went on to record 27 runs on 23 hits to earn the sweep. Vinny Todino (Eastchester, N.Y.) had a big game for the Dolphins after going 6-for-7 with a pair of RBI and four runs scored. He was one of 11 players with a hit for the Dolphins.
Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) finished game two 3-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI and Suriel closed out a strong day with the bat going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI.
Calandrillo worked a complete game for the win in game two, allowing six runs on 17 hits. He did not walk a batter and fanned a career-high 13 batters in earning his first win of the season.
The sweep on Sunday gives Mount Saint Vincent back-to-back victories for just the second time this season and improves it to 6-10 overall on the season and to 3-1 against league opponents. The Dolphins will step out of conference on Tuesday when they play at Baruch. First pitch with the Bearcats is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
