Farmingdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team picked up a doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon at Farmingdale St. The Dolphins snapped a five game losing streak with a 12-9 game one victory, before falling to the Rams 8-1 in the back end of the set. Senior James Labartino (Holbrook, N.Y) collected four hits in the opener, while Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) had two hits in game two.
A close game until the late innings, Mount Saint Vincent stormed back from 4-2 behind with a four run sixth inning in game one. The Dolphins pounded out five hits in the frame and received a two run double from Mike Esposito (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the inning.
Leading 6-4, the Mount allowed Farmingdale St. to score three times in the home half of the sixth to retake a 7-6 lead, but the Dolphins scored six runs over their final three at-bats to hold off the Rams who scored a single run in the eighth and ninth innings. Labartino highlighted a three run seventh with an RBI triple for the Dolphins.
Labartino recorded his fourth multi-hit game of the season in the first game and his first triple of the season. He scored two runs and drove in one for the Dolphins in the victory. He was one of six players with at least two hits in the game, including John McManus (Bayside, N.Y.) who went 2-for-3 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI.
Senior Mike Trainor (Patterson, N.Y.) picked up the win and evened his record at 2-2 on the season after hurling 7.0 innings for the Mount. He allowed six earned runs on 13 hits in the game and fanned four batters. Ryan Schlichter (Southold, N.Y.) and Labartino combined to work 2.0 innings in relief and allowed just a single unearned run.
In game two, the Mount offense struggled; recording just five hits and only one for extra bases. The Rams pounded out eight hits in the win and used three run innings in the fourth and sixth frames to pull away.
Trailing 2-1 in the fourth, Mount Saint Vincent allowed three Farmingdale St. runs, including two that scored on a two run single from Frank Scarlato. The Rams put the game away in the sixth when they scored three more times. Danny DeVito delivered the big blow in the sixth with a two run safety of his own.
Sargente finished the game 2-for-2 with a run scored for the Dolphins, while Fernando Suriel (Yonkers, N.Y.) collected the lone RBI. Suriel, Esposito and Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.) each recorded a hit for the Dolphins.
Brandon Cruz was the only Farmingdale St. player with more then one hit after he went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Ryan McAllister scored twice for the Rams and Scarlato finished the game with three RBI.
Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent after working 5.0 innings and allowing six runs on five hits. He struck out three batters but walked six in the outing. C.J. Bula posted the win for the Rams and fired 6.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out two and walked two.
The split on Saturday moves Mount Saint Vincent to 4-10 overall on the season and to 1-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will hit the field again on Sunday afternoon when they travel to NYU-POLY. The league set with the Blue Jays is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
