Yonkers, N.Y. – Senior attack Mike Shea (Congers, N.Y.) netted a season-high four goals and added an assist and rookie net minder Kyle Kalibat (Oceanside, N.Y.) recorded his first career win between the pipes as the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Lacrosse team toppled Alvernia 8-2. Shea led eight Dolphins with at least one point with his five in the tilt.
Mount Saint Vincent got off to a quick 3-0 lead on Wednesday, tallying three times in the first four minutes. Cavan Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.) opened the scoring at the 13:54 mark and that was followed by goals from Derek Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and Matt DeSimone (Congers, N.Y.).
Trailing by three Alvernia struck with the next two markers to slice its deficit to one. Sean Boyd buried back-to-back goals in the final five minutes of the first period to bring the Crusaders to within a goal after 15 minutes.
Boyd's second goal would prove to be the last of the night for the visitors, as the Dolphins scored the final five goals of the contest. Derek Valance scored his second of the night with just under five minutes left in the second period and Shea went on to score four straight goals, including a man-up marker with 5:12 left in regulation.
Shea added a pair of groundballs to his five points and only he and Derek Valance scored more then once in the game for the Dolphins. Valance also chipped in with a groundball for Mount Saint Vincent.
Chris Gaustamnacchia (Monroe, N.Y.) had a solid night in the face-off department for the Mount, going 8-for-11 on the night and he also collected a pair of groundballs. Bruce Pappas picked up an assist for the Dolphins and led the team with nine groundballs. He was one of 11 players with at least two groundballs on the night, with DeSimone adding four.
Kalibat picked up his first win after making seven saves in 56:50 of action. He also picked up a pair of groundballs. Dom Scipioni (Yonkers, N.Y.) got the first action of his career in the final four minutes and made four stops for the Mount. Kevin Shupp had a solid night for Alvernia after making 15 stops and collecting six groundballs.
Overall in the game, Mount Saint Vincent held the edge in nearly every team category. The Dolphins outshot the Crusaders 47-27 and also held the advantage in groundballs 40-34. The Dolphins also won eight of the 12 face-offs taken and went 11-for-14 in clearing attempts.
The win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 1-2 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look to continue their momentum on Saturday when they host Wells at Tibbetts Brook Park. The non-conference contest is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
