Ft. Pierce, Fla. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team continued its Florida trip on Monday afternoon with a 9-3 loss to #13 St. Scholastica. The Mount offense could muster only four hits in the game, with three going for extra bases. Senior Mike Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) drove in two of the three runs for the Dolphins on the day.
The Saints opened an early lead on Mount Saint Vincent starter Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) after they plated four runs in the top half of the second inning. St. Scholastica totaled three hits in the inning, with the big blow being a two run double off the bat of Brian Marshik.
After the Saints extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning, the Dolphins scratched their way back into the game with two tallies of their own in the home half of the stanza. With the bases loaded and two outs, Pope sent his second double of the season down the right field line to drive in Tyler Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) and James Labartino (Holbrook, N.Y.) to make the score 5-2.
After the two teams both went scoreless in the fifth inning, St. Scholastica broke the game open with three runs in the sixth and a single run in the seventh to pull in front 9-2 late in the contest. After loading the bases with no one out, the Saints scored their first run of the sixth on a wild pitch and then received a two run double from Joe Link to close out the scoring in the inning.
Trailing by seven, Mount Saint Vincent made some noise in the eighth inning scoring a run on a pair of doubles. Vinny Todino (Eastchester, N.Y.) led off the frame with a two bagger down the left field line and later scored on a Labartino double to cut the deficit to six runs with four outs to play with. Labartino's hit would prove to be the last for the Dolphins in the game, as they went in order in their final at bat.
Overall in the game, St. Scholastica outhit Mount Saint Vincent 9-4 with Marshik going 3-for-4 for the Saints with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. Link also had a multi hit game, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Mount Saint Vincent had four different players with a hit, with Mike Pope, Labartino and Todino all collecting doubles. Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) added the other hit for the Mount on the afternoon.
Mongelli took the loss for the Dolphins and fell to 1-1 on the season after working 5.0 innings and allowing eight runs on eight hits. He struck out four in the outing, but walked five for the Dolphins. David Barningham picked up the win for St. Scholastica after working 4.1 innings of relief. He allowed one run on three hits, while striking out three batters.
The loss on Monday drops Mount Saint Vincent to 3-5 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look to rebound on Tuesday when they take on Earlham in Ft. Pierce, Fla. First pitch is set for 10:00 a.m.
