Dolphins Back On Track With Road Win At NYU-POLY

, N.Y. The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team got back in the win column on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of Skyline rival NYU-POLY. The Dolphins took the match by set scores of 25-22, 25-23, and 25-20 and have now won four of their first five matches to open the season. Senior David Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) and junior Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.) combined for 24 of the Mount's 34 kills in the match.

 

Guerrero led the Mount again with 14 winners against the Blue Jays and also added eight digs to the winning effort. Guerrero has now posted at least 12 kills in each match he has appeared in this season and is averaging an even 4.0 kills per set to lead the team.

 

Bacchi also continued his strong start to the 2011 season on Saturday, posting 10 winners and hitting a blistering .421. Bacchi also lifted a team-high nine digs for the Dolphins in the victory. Bacchi is the team leader in overall kills in 2011 with 54.

 

Senior setter Michael Quinn (Wantagh, N.Y.) handed out a match-high 29 assists for the Dolphins on Saturday and also added a pair of kills, two total blocks and four defensive digs. Mark Sargente (Hauppauge, N.Y.) chipped in with four winners and the Mount's only two service aces in the match.

 

NYU-POLY was led by Joe Gabor who posted 11 kills and a match-high 11 digs. Fild Kroqi added 10 winners for the Blue Jays and seven digs, while James Lukban recorded a team-high 24 assists.

 

Overall in the match, Mount Saint Vincent finished off 34 kills to 27 for NYU-POLY and posted the only three total team blocks in the match. The Blue Jays finished the afternoon with 40 digs to 27 for the Mount.

 

The win on Saturday improves Mount Saint Vincent to 4-1 overall on the season and to 1-0 against Skyline Conference opponents. The Dolphins will look to continue their momentum on February 9 when they travel to Yeshiva. The conference match with the Maccabees is slated for 8:00 p.m.
