Jamaica, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team opened the 2011 season with a five set victory at York on Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins secured the win with set scores of 24-26, 25-19, 21-25, 26-24 and 16-14. Junior Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the Mount with 16 kills and was one of three Dolphins to post double-figure in that category on the afternoon.
The two teams alternated wins over the first three sets, until Mount Saint Vincent posted back-to-back victories, needing extra points to secure the match win. The most lopsided set of the match was the second stanza in which the Dolphins hit .435 as a team and posted 12 winners against just a pair of attack errors.
After dropping the third set to the Cardinals, Mount Saint Vincent fell behind 12-6 in the fourth and used a 9-2 run to pull in front 15-14. The rest of the set would feature seven ties, before the Mount strung together two straight points to knot the match at two sets apiece.
In the fifth set the Dolphins again found themselves trailing at 10-9, but rebounded with four straight points which included three straight service aces. After York tied the score at 14-14, Mount Saint Vincent got kills from Mark Sargente (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and Michael Sin (Hicksville, N.Y.) to take the set and earn the victory.
Bacchi led the offensive charge for the Mount with his 16 kills and he also totaled eight digs and a match-high six service aces. Sargente registered 13 kills for the Dolphins in his first match and lifted nine digs, while Sin rounded out the trio in double-figures with 10 winners. Sin also lifted nine digs and handed out five assists.
Michael Quinn opened the season on a strong note for the Dolphins after hitting .750 with six kills and leading the way with 33 assists. He also posted eight digs and collected a block assist along with Sargente. Michael Knott (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) led the Dolphins on Saturday with 15 digs.
York was paced by Ahmed Helmi who recorded a match-high 27 kills to go along with eight digs. Alex Niles posted a double-double for the Cardinals with 12 kill and 12 digs, while Terrence Sutton lifted a match-high 16 digs.
The win improves Mount Saint Vincent to 1-0 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Saturday, January 29 when they travel to Southern Vermont for a non-conference match.
